Just leased a home near Old Mt Vernon/Old Mill Road and had some questions about the area. As we think of questions, we will add to the list, but our first set of questions:

1. Where is the nearest, or easiest to get to, Sam's Club?
2. What is the easiest route to Huntington Metro?
3. Are their city restrictions on garage/yard sales?
4. Are outdoor fireplaces allowed? (I actually had a fire truck called to our house in Florida over the use of one).

Thanks!

Welcome neighbor. I don't have an answer about Sam's Club as I don't shop there. However, they are going to be putting in a Costco soon at the old Multiplex theater just across Route 1.

To get to Huntington Metro you can either take the parkway, cut over to Fort Hunt and then turn left on Huntington, crossing Route 1. Going that way will avoid a lot of lights on Route 1. Another option is to just go out to Route 1 and take it to Huntington and turn left. Finally, you can go out to Route 1 then veer off at Sherwood Hall and take that to Fort Hunt. You should try all to see which you like better but they're probably going to come out about the same. The parkway's further because it bends around but the straight shot of Route 1 has a lot of lights. Fort Hunt has a few lights but they're not long ones.

I've never heard of a restriction on yard sales as folks around here have them all the time. Just go for it.

I have an outdoor fireplace and burn stuff in it all the time. Nobody cares and I'm not aware of any restrictions. We're in unincorporated county and not a city which might account for that.

Hope that helps.

Thanks. I will try all those routes. I'd prefer to drive to work, but am seeing that parking may be an issue where I work.

Follow-on question...is there a bus system that goes from the area to Pentagon area? If so, is there somewhere on the web I can read about times and costs and all of that?

You could take the REX bus (out on Rt.1) to Huntington metro and then catch the yellow line to the Pentagon.

What is the usual duration of that bus trip, from Mt Vrn/Rt 1 to Huntington Metro going north at 630am and south around 530pm?

Here are the schedules and maps for buses that run from near you to Huntington Metro:

Here's one that runs from near you to Old Town. From there you can take the Dash bus to King St. metro and then to the Pentagon:

There are a also lot of folks here that commute to the Pentagon so you could find a car pool really easily.

Great info! Thanks. I will also ask around for car pool info, as that could be a good option...at least until I get a parking permit!

Congrats on the new house. I know that you were looking around, and it sounds like you found a great neighborhood. Hopefully your parking pass will arrive soon. I think you will actually enjoy the drive up the GW parkway in the morning. Good luck

Yep, we found a nice place with a large yard and pool. A perfect mix between commute and country features. I appreciate all your info throughout the week we were in town looking, it really helped in our search!
