I'm new to Oahu (4 days) and have begun my house hunting and am having a bit of trouble (of course haha). Anyway I work in Mililani and my wife is working in town. We are looking in Mililani, Waipio, Waipahu, Waikele, and northern parts of honolulu like Alewa Heights, Upper Manoa.
We cant find anything haha. We have a budget of $1900.00, have 2 cats, want to get a dog, want a single family house/townhouse. Does this exist? Do I really need to look in Ewa to find this? The cat thing is a deal breaker almost everywhere unfortunately.
And my second question. I love love love Kaneohe/Kailua area. My wifes commute to HI isn't too bad from windward but I have no idea what mine would be. I work odd hours occasionally 9-5 so how long would a kaneohe---->mililani commute be?

To me, out of the places you listed Mililani would be the nicest and best chance to find what your looking for. For $1900, you should be able to find a very nice apartment/condo in that area, but a single family home would be pushing it (try Kapolei/Aiea). You could probably find an older home in those cities you listed for the money your talking, but those aren't too pleasing from the outside.
A commute from windward to mililani would be about 30-40 min max assuming there are no accidents coming your way H3/H1 West. You would actually be going the opposite way of "normal" heavy traffic during those hours.
Actually, you should be able to find a nice townhome over in windward for $1900. I would list that as my number one choice to be honest...
Thanks for the quick reply. Im going to head over to kaneohe/kailua this weekend and try to find something, but definitely keep my ears open for something in mililani!
whatever you decide on, don't move to kapolei/ewa! the commute wouldn't be that bad for you, probably 20-30 min, but since your wife is working in town, her commute would be grueling (assuming she drove by herself).

You might want to check out vrbo.com. It is a free site, and has listings that are primarily for vacation rentals, however, we just moved here a month ago from the mainland and went through that site. We got into a completely furnished townhome, utilities included, in Mililani with a year long lease. We simply contacted the owner that we were looking at renting long term as we were relocating here, not vacationing. He also came down in the monthly rent compared to what the site showed he wanted if it were being used as a vacation rental. It can't hurt to try....
Well I actually found a place in Alewa Heights. It seems to work well for both of our commutes. Thanks for all of the advice though.
