My daughter and her husband are buying a house on Oahu and I'm planning to help them work on it. In New York I'm allowed to do all the work on my own house as long as I have a permit and meet the building code. Oh yea, I'm part owner in the house, so it is my house. In looking through this forum, I saw somewhere saying that you have to have a licensed plumber and electrician to do all your work on Oahu. Is this true? First thing I want to do is to install a dishwasher and microwave range hood in the Kitchen. I'd like to wire a new circuit for each one and then I have to hook up the plumbing on the DW.
Is a homeowner allowed to do small jobs like this.

Thanks

You read right... you need licensed electrician and plumber.

Small scale DIY projects like swapping out a light fixture are not likely to be a problem, but adding new wiring would be a code violation that could cause problems.

You can try a bit of slight-of-hand using HRS 448E-9(b). You get a licnesed electrician to pull the permits and lay out the work. You do the grunt work. The electrician checks what you did and make the final connection. So long as they are willing to call you a trainee and supervise your work, it's legal. However, it may be hard to find a licensed electrician who wll do this.
