I was offered a job by the navy in Honolulu. It pays 50k a year . I have 3 kids under 5 and a wife. Is there and housing for people like me? Meaning renting homes cost? 3 bed would be nice in a safe for White family area. I have been to Hawaii 3 times and was always told to be careful . you can get jumped.. I am only asking.
Yes there is housing for you. As far as being in a "white" neighborhood - as a licensed Agent, I cannot ethically steer you towards or away from any particular neighborhood - this is something you need to choose yourself. You would also need to decide how long you want your commute to be, how many beds/baths you need, and if you'll be sending your children to preschool/daycare.
As an aside, I'm not sure where you got your information from - as far as "being careful because you might get jumped" - Hawaii is ethnically diverse, lots of different people with different cultures and backgrounds, and lots of military presence...
I'm trying to figure out how to say this without coming off as cruel, so please don't take it like that - but if you're going to believe what other people have told you and you're concerned about being "jumped" (which I also take to mean that you're concerned for your family's safety), then it's possible that Hawaii isn't for you. Yes, we have crime here, but it's not like in the mainland. But if you come here with the mindset that the "local" people are going to beat you up, then it will probably happen, because of your perspective, your attitude (actions speak louder than words). But if you come here with an open mind and realize that just because we're in the middle of the ocean, that it doesn't mean that we're uncivilized, running around beating people up.
Again, I don't mean for you to take it the wrong way. It was just the best way I could explain it.
As another aside, you mention you've been here 3 times, so I'm sure you've gotten a taste what it's like to be here...did you like it or not?
Thank you for the reply. I turned the job down. I did like the island. But my hotel room was robed the first trip, The second trip a lady down the hall in the hotel was mugged and the 3 trip was good. I have never had any of the problems here , but know it happens.
PS I asked for a place that is safe for a white family not a white neighborhood.
Hello,
I have had the great privilege of interviewing for a position with a hospital in
Honolulu. I have begun researching the area for housing and my options for housing. I am constantly being warned about the high cost of living in Hawaii. I realize this of course, cost of living runs high in different areas all over the country. There must be reasonable housing there because not everyone who lives there is wealthy. I only need one bedroom or a studio, there is only me. Are there any real estate agents that deal with rentals? I appreciate any input.
Mahalo
There are rentals all over, especially if you'll be living in the Honolulu area. However, rentals work differently here - you can't rent anything until you get on island (so it's possible that you will need to stay in a hotel for a little while) and there isn't one specific agent who will show you rentals, you work with whomever manages the properties.

Hello Janelles,
I read your response to a Sailor relocating to HNL and I have the opportunity as well because of a job offer to an Airline on the Island. Since you are not "Ethically" able to steer people from or away neighborhoods, could point out the neighborhoods to stay away from? I have my family and my wife and I have three kids, boy 14, girl 13, and younger boy 11. I want to know of an area where we won't be in harms way and where my wife can get to work, she is a Medical Assistant and I need to be within 20-30 minutes of HNL.

Any helpful advice is surely appreciated
look into Salt Lake, Pearl City, more eastern side of Honolulu.
The H1 traffic gets pretty backed up. I lived 8 miles from my job in Honolulu and it would take me anywhere for 40-60 minutes to get to work. Same as if I took The Bus.

Whoa, that bad huh! I've been there quite a bit, but haven't roamed the neighborhoods to know what is a good area to live and what isn't, so the west HNL on H1, how is it?
I can't tell you where to live. But if you tell me exactly where in Honolulu you'll be working, I can give you an idea of the neighborhoods that would be within the 20-30 minutes that you mentioned. It would then be up to you to decide which area you think you'd like best.
Also, are you thinking of renting or buying? What's your budget? This would be another big factor in your decision as well. How many bedrooms, bathrooms, parking? Do you have pets? Would you need a yard? Single family home or condo/townhouse? Things to consider.
If you let me know what you need, I can try to help you!
