Ohio's November Unemployment Rate (Columbus, Cleveland: 2015, home, employment)

Nice downward jump. I like how it stated that the biggest gains did not seem to be associated with temporary seasonal work for the holidays. Ohio is below the national rate now and we should see decent corresponding drops in all Ohio's major metros.

As expected, rates in every Ohio metro dropped for November as well as 85 of 88 counties. Ohio continues to recover strongly.

Here are some of the November numbers with October's in (). I also only have Columbus' metro rate because it was listed in the Dispatch. I checked around but don't see a metro list yet for November.

Metro Rates

Columbus: 6.6% (7.6%)

City Rates... Most saw between 0.5% and 1.2% drop from October. Only Cleveland remained steady.

Columbus: 6.8% (7.6%)
Akron: 8.1% (8.7%)
Cincinnati: 8.1% (9.2%)
Toledo: 9.0% (10.1%)
Cleveland: 9.1% (9.1%)
Dayton: 9.6% (10.7%)
Youngstown: 10.1% (11.3%)

County Rates... All but Montgomery County are now below the national average, with Montgomery even with it.

Franklin: 6.7% (7.6%)
Cuyahoga: 7.3% (7.4%)
Hamilton: 7.7% (8.7%)
Stark: 8.2% (9.1%)
Mahoning: 8.3% (9.0%)
Lucas: 8.5% (9.7%)
Montgomery: 8.6% (9.6%)

I don't know how I feel about these new numbers that are coming out. If it were a select few states, then I wouldn't doubt them, but long time suffering states like Nevada, California, Michigan, and Florida also saw huge drops in unemployment; all states did actually. I have a feeling people have lost their unemployment or are just giving up looking for jobs.

Well, rates do tend to drop this time of year for the holidays, though from what I read, most of the hiring done in Ohio was in manufacturing and government, which are not typically seasonal employment. That would, though, explain why Cleveland and Columbus have the lowest metro rates, as that touches their respective strengths.

The last clue is to look at, when they are released, if the "Civilian Labor Force" went up or down for November. If it went down, it means more people dropped off the rolls. I know, at least for Columbus, it went up in October. November's details won't be out for a few days, probably.

Edit: Cleveland, the only metro to have November's details released so far, had it's CLF go down by a few thousand, but the number of people employed also went up. So there at least, some people did stop looking for work, but more people were hired as well.

They're already out. I read that too on the BLS site, but then the Dispatch ran an article, as well as the Enquirer, Blade, etc that discussed metro unemployment rates for November. Also, BLS has Cleveland's rate listed for November as well.

I did in an above post, though only for certain cities. The local newspaper sites for Columbus, Dayton, Cincy, Cleveland, and Youngstown all had articles related to November's unemployment rate.

Ok, I know this thread is old. Only way I found it was by searching the forums. I hate to create a new thread for a topic that is already out. State unemployment rates came out, once again Ohio is doing much better than the nation, and much better than ALL neighboring states.

Ohio's unemployment rate was 7.2% in August

Pennsylvania was 8.1%
West Virginia was 7.5%
Kentucky was 8.5%
Indiana was 8.3%
and Michigan was 9.4%

Ohio is also kicking all of our neighbors' to the curb in job growth over the year. Ohio created the 4th highest amount of jobs from August 2011-August 2012
