Just want to know if I am alone in OKC in the immense stress I feel about the upcoming season. The may tornado was a block or 2 away from my place of work, and my younger brother and sisters school. I am honestly very scared. Yes, I am faint of heart. But I would prefer not losing any of my loved ones in a natural disaster.

There have been times in the past when I've been aware the season is nearing, but not so much anymore. I don't like to hear the warning siren, but odds are nothing will happen. The horror of what has been at Moore and other places in the path of a direct hit is bad, but I can't dwell on it. Opening 2 windows 4 or 5 inches on different outside walls helps prevent a vacuum forming if a funnel passes nearby. When I lived in OKCity, a funnel passed 2 blocks away and I easily felt the moment it happened. I don't know if the pressure would have caused damage, but I had 2 windows open. The dog and I sat in a hallway closet and I hoped the master bedroom would blow away since my husband at the time refused to get up and help me with our dog. This was the tornado that hit the synagogue on NW Pennsylvania about 1975.

It has been part of my life since I was born and I am over 65 now. It is just part of life.

I don't fear tornadoes but have tremendous respect for them as well as fires, floods, wind, cold, heat, and drought.

And don't be lulled into thinking tornadoes only occur in the spring. I remember one in particular in about 1973 that killed people just a few hundred yards from my home.

We were taught from my earliest memories to be weather aware and to take the appropriate precautions. That advice is still sound.

Basement at work, tornado shelter at home. Pay attention to the weather and don't take any unnecessary risks during potentially bad weather. Lived in KS, TX and now OK and been near a few tornados but this is the only place I've had an underground shelter so I feel pretty calm.
