You may have heard the old adage “you can't fight city hall”? A group of citizens and I have found out.... it's true! You may associate that phrase with the corrupt system of big city bosses controlling the political activities, with past history. Maybe we only assume that corruption in local government is relegated to history.
Regardless of statutes on the books, a city council can reverse itself on legal decisions such as plat approvals, without consequences. Conversely, if you or I are signatories to a legal document, we are held to those conditions or there will be penalties. Not so with city leaders. According to one city attorneys' letter, “courts are hesitant to interfere with the legislative process in municipalities”. Translation; Do any thing you want! Consequently, don't expect to win a judgment against a city for it's wrong doings. Apparently the judicial system feels that government should be held to a lower standard of responsibility then individuals. I thought the mob were the only untouchables but apparently city councils also fall into that category.
Many of you will never experience wrongs against you by a city, but if you ever do, you may as well suck it up! Many questions pop up in your mind when you are wronged by a municipal government and you are left defenceless to do anything about it. It beckons the question; What's the sense of having laws when a city council can violate them will-nilly? Why not just admit that we have a king and his court instead of a mayor and his council?
This brings on a sense of disillusionment about government that comes with the knowledge that your local government can wrong you without reprocutions. Maybe there's a good reason people fail to take their civic responsibility of voting seriously. Why bother to vote when elected officials are going to align themselves according to the way the political winds are blowing towards the big money.
