suttle must think since having OPS employees and alumni reps and local high school alumni presidents also be omaha world herald "reporters"

than having a weatherman (Gerard) or ex newscaster (Rezac) will help Suttle run the city better

New communications chief for Suttle - Omaha.com

Omaha Mayor Jim Suttle has hired a communications director to replace former spokesman Ron Gerard.

So what exactly is your problem with this and who would have been a more appropriate hire?

not a problem really, just a observation.

I don't see a problem with hiring a familiar face to the media, and someone that is used to being in front of the camera. Didn't George Bush use Tony Snow as his Press Secretary?

There are much better hires to criticize him on, like his bicycle czar.

Just curious, but do you actually have a legitimate gripe about this, or is it just another "since I don't use it I don't like it" sorta thing?

Based on the interview with the new bike czar, he seemed just didn't really seem to be all that impressive. He presented himself as a dumb kid that just didn't really seem like he was capable of doing the job. Did you hear the interview? Did you hear him say he dreamed of streets where 2 year old kids could ride their bikes in the streets?

Yeah I saw it. I also saw a couple reporters (Dave Roberts and Joe Jordan if I'm not mistaken) try to take a simple PR announcement and turn it into a de facto job interview and got the kid rattle. You can fault him for not being better prepared, but the reporters shouldn't have tried to blindside him either.

In the end though, it makes no difference. The kid's job is to make the city more bicycle friendly, and he isn't going to do that with public speaking skills.

I would have thought if he was being announced to the public that he'd have been aware there might be questions, and perhaps have been ready to make a few remarks. You might put that more on Suttle's administration for not having him prepared.

In any event, communication skills are necessary in every aspect of public administration. Even a simple bicycle coordinator position.
