Most of us knew this was coming, but now it's official.

The Omaha Civic Auditorium will shut down in June 2014, Mayor Jim Suttle's office said Friday.

The date brings closure to the aging 9,300-seat building, Music Hall and convention hall, after a series of studies and debates over the facility's future.

I won't lie, I'm a little sad. Lots of good memories there!

Agreed. Ultimately I support the move as it's for the greater good of Downtown Omaha, but it still is a little sad with the loss of history there.

Interesting note. The famous "you're no Jack Kennedy" line, said by Lloyd Bentsen to Dan Quayle, took place at the Civic.

It will be a sad bit of history lost. Elvis gave one of his last concerts there which was featured in a CBS TV Special, "Elvis in Concert".

That's a little sad. I remember going to an Ice Capades show there shortly after it opened in the mid to late 50s -- a little trip I won from my paper route.

It's not that old. the building is only about 60 years old. Not really a 'historic' building. It's not like they are taking down a 120 year old building.

I myself hope to see them develop a nice URBAN development there. Perhaps something like the old market. The area is 2x2 blocks, the same size as the old market's core. We have enough parking lots or single use buildings in the city.

If you vote for me for Mayor tomorrow, the Civic Auditorium will not close.

This property wont develop like the Old Market. Modern real estate just doesn't work like it did 125 years ago. Also on that note I fully expect this lot to sit empty for a long long time. There is way to much vacant land downtown and putting another 4 blocks on the market isn't going to speed anything up.

I do think the Civic needs to go, it is a money pit for the city. I just don't think the momentum is there for all of the space downtown to be built on in the near future. If certain a project can get going and a certain lot can sell in the next year my opinion will change. Until then I don't think there is any reason to expect a quick redevelopment.
