I found a condo for rent in Santa Ana just south of W MacArthur Blvd on S Bear St. It's very close to the South Coast Plaza shopping center. Can anyone tell me if the area near South Coast Plaza would be safe to live. I found a couple of apartment complexes in that area that I'd like to check out as well. I'm assuming that anything near the shopping center would be safe but I should probably stay south of MacArthur, but let me know if this assumption is wrong.

Thanks!

Its not a terrible area but the bad areas aren't far away. Stay as far south as possible as complexes can go from "OK" to "Does anyone speak English?" in a half a mile.

EC got it right...

If it's on Bear, it's prolly OK but it can be pretty dicey nearby. Check this...

Bear street is ok for about a mile down from SCP sunflower is ok on the tower/ocean side. Essentially the dividing line for less Spanish and more English language is west of the 405 south of the 55, at the base of the foothills, and along the coast Not always but usually.

If you are worried strictly about crime, that is a decent area. But, some of the worst areas of Santa Ana are not that far away.

There are a few nice gated communities and apartment areas right around there, especially if you go down Bear towards SCP, or back down MacArther past Bristal. So, you are on the fringes of a nice area.

If you are worried, as others above allude to, being in a white/english speaking area versus a latino/spanish speaking area -- you are in an area where there are lots of spanish speakers. So, whether it be your neighbors, the schools, the local grocery store or the local dry-cleaner, there will be plenty of spanish speakers around (this is, after all, as I am sure you know, Santa Ana, not Aliso Viejo).
