Says who? It all depends what you are hunting. A . 308 is an awfully large caliber and it's used very often for hunting large game . the Remington 700 chambered in 308 is one of the best known hunting rifles ever made. Not every hunter uses a bolt action rifle either, plenty use AR15 styled rifles for smaller game. They are called "modern sporting rifles" for a reason
