I guess the cleanup didn't actually go as planned... I saw that clip. So, the moral of the story is there's never a good reason to mix whales and explosives.

yes, it's a video of a whale exploding. If you are among the faint of heart I'll give you the abridged scenario:

Many years ago a humongous dead whale washed up on the coast. Nobody could figure out how to get rid of the carcass and after a bit it began to smell pretty terrible. Some one came up with the genius idea of blowing the carcass to smithereens with some explosives. They tried the idea because there didn't seem to be any reasonable alternative at the time.

Well, everybody came out to watch what would happen. The explosive went off and bits of rotting whale carcass peppered the beach (and probably a few onlookers and their cars), but most of the carcass still remained -- only now mangled and in a few slightly more manageable sized pieces.

The end.

To clarify, the Oregon Department of Transportation is in charge of Oregon Beaches as they're technically considered highways. ODOT did not have any equipment powerful enough to move the whale off the beach, nor anything that could dig a hole big enough to bury it in.

Thus the idea to use explosives, of which ODOT had plenty.

The Humpback Whale that washed up near Whisky Run Beach last week is being left alone to decompose naturally. Lesson learned I guess.

haha i would hope 'lesson learned'!! no offense, but the use of explosives sounds like maybe a group of 10 year old boys were in charge of the situation! Seems like, i can't believe i'm writing this, using a huge chain saw to cut it up may've been a more manageable option.
