But it's not about Portland - it's about a place as far from Portland as you can get and still be in Oregon.

Good article. Makes me want to check it out. I have camped and hiked extensively in the Steens Mountain area, but this is even father afield than that. Very cool.

It is similar to what you find in the Little Blitzen Gorge.

That is a gorgeous area. I busted cattle and built fences just west of there in my early teens. Never got that far east unfortunately but it's been on my list.

I just came back from a road trip south to Shasta, east over Lassen to Reno (World Science Fiction Convention) then north through the Black Rock Desert to Oregon and west to Ashland, then back home. We saw maybe 2 dozen people in the entire Lassen National Park. North of Pyramid Lake in Nevada, we drove for over an hour before seeing another car. Heading west across SE Oregon, the land was empty except around Lakeview and Klamath Falls where there was water. Hwy 66 across the Cascades to Ashland was deserted. In 60 miles we saw 3 cars heading our direction and 6 headed the other way.

Except for cities and freeways, Northern California, Northern Nevada and SE Oregon are empty. We did see semi loads of sani-castles heading for Burning Man outside Gerlach.

I was at Lassen this June, the road through the park was still closed because of snow. They had snow so late I wonder if many tourists routed themselves away from the park.

This is probably one of my favorite pieces of road. I've driven it many times, and have stories from family members about memorable wrecks and strange sightings along there.

Yeah, if the old TV show Route 66 had been shot in Oregon instead of California, driving in a Corvette convertible would have been a lot more fun! Highway 66 in Oregon has some spectacular scenery.
