My wife and I are taking a 4 day trip to the north coast of Oregon Oct 29-Nov 2 and have a few questions to anyone that can answer. We're flying into Portland and driving Hwy 6 (Wilson River Hwy). Is this going to be an icy or snowy drive? I guess the weather is cloudy and rainy this time of year, but is there any chance of sunlight? Anyone stay in a yurt? What kind of heater is in there? Any other tips/notes?

Thanks in advance...

You will probably be OK. Snow in the Coast Range on Halloween is rare, and shouldn't last more than a day if it happens. The Wilson River Highway is not particularly high. Check the weather, and if a cold and nasty storm is on the way, drive down the Columbia on HWY 30. It won't add more than an hour to your trip. The big winter storms normally don't arrive until November, and they normally start pretty warm. Snow is rare before Thanksgiving. The fronts are followed by "cool, moist, unstable air" (weather forecaster jargon) that drops the temperature 10 degrees, and can result in some icy roads at dawn, that melt off by 10 AM. Watch for ice on bridges if the overnight temp drops near freezing.

You will probably not have any trouble, and have a good chance of some nice weather. I'm talking a glorious, warm Indian Summer, not just a few glimpses of the sun. Or it could rain and blow like crazy. You never know.

oh my gosh, we used to go camping there at Cape Lookout, like EVERY freakin weekend when i was a kid! Was either there, or Clear Lake out of Sisters...anyhow, it can be a beautiful place, and beachcombing can be terrific. my folks and my brother all found glass floats out there, the old japanese ones, and once, i found a message in a bottle from a russian fisherman!! Might not get so lucky...but who knows?
Yurts, ummm.......i dont THINK they are heated, but I cant say for sure. If you look up Oregon State Parks website, it should show you pics of the yurts and give you details.
oh, and a good part about the cape lookout park, if you stay there, is they have really nice bathrooms w/showers, HOT water! yeaahh!
Tiffany
oh, btw, if the weather is really crappy, take a day and go to the cheese factory. Good free samples.
