Hi,
I lived in Corvallis in the mid to late 70's. There was a 'community' that appeared to be
self sufficient outside of Philomath, back in the woods somewhere. Is anyone familiar with it? They had
built the coolest homes and it was so peaceful.

Back in the 70s, there were several settlements in the hills west of Corvallis between there and the coast, some had a general store that gave a little self sufficiency to the areas. Those stores, etc., are no longer in existence, leaving only a few houses. The roads are a little better, and cars are better and no one can afford to offer services they did back then due to cost of staying open. There are several wide spot in the road settlements, with a few homes still in existence scattered around the country side. Many had schools at one time, and this has changed as the kids are bused to other towns.

Here is an interesting map. Go West of Corvallis, and click on the different spots that will show you where at one time there was a school. At one time, each of these was in a settlement, and some settlements still exist.

With no more information than you gave, it is impossible to know where you were talking about.

You will find more of these to the north of Corvallis also.
