I hear Oregonians care less about how they look and dress (YAY!). Is that true? And are they less shallow in general?

Yes. Oregonian women are often called ugly by other states because not wearing/very light makeup is the norm here.

I think it is silly to tar everyone in California with that particular brush. Not EVERYONE in California is vain or shallow, just as not EVERYONE in Oregon isn't. Certainly there are places in California where people make their living - or TRY to make their living, anyway - off their looks.

The lifestyle and the life choices you'd find in, say, West Los Angeles aren't the same as what you'd find in Chico, Ca or Santa Cruz, CA or Davis, CA or Ojai, Ca. Big city California and big city Oregon (ie: the city of Portland proper) might be more similar than big city California is to small city California.

A lot of the questions you've asked have been along the "I heard.." or "Someone said...." line and border on the outlandish - where ever your are getting you information from, I'd stop listening to that source entirely.

In theory yes, but at the same time, the whole "I don't care" rough-and-tumble outdoorsy hipster look has sort of become a trend in and of itself.

Each community has a culture, comparing any state as a whole to another is inane.

It definitely depends on exactly what areas you are comparing, but ultimately you're still talking about generalizations. Overall I think it's a true statement, however there are always exceptions to generalizations. Also, I don't live in Portland so I can't compare that with Beverly Hills, for example. I lived in Sacramento for a long, long time, and have been in Grants Pass for 6 years. It's definitely true that downtown GP is more casual than downtown Sacramento. Rural areas? Not so much - pretty casual for both.
