GPS coordinates? The majority of the land in the Siuslaw watershed is private. Don't jump to conclusions.

There are plenty of private sections (section is a square mile) in the NFs. Look at a FS map of the O&C Lands.

National Forest, much of it, is divided into grids: a checkerboard of National Forest and private land.

The private squares were given to the railroads to help with the cost of installing track. Some of the squares were sold to private parties in a government program that I can't remember the name of: Rocks and something or other, maybe it was rocks and timber sales. No luck finding it on google and the local history books are stored away.

Look at the Forest Service maps. They are a grid of dark green and light green. Those diffeerent shades of green differentiate private owned from Forest Service owned.

That's not national forest, that's O&C land managed by the BLM. The checkerboard pattern results from giving the railroads every other section (square mile) to pay for rail construction. The parcels smaller than a square mile are private land that was siezed by the government for taxes and never put back on the market. They did a lot of that during the '30s.

OK, not the same location, but try this one. This is right in the middle of the Siuslaw National Forest. It appears to me to be at least 10 miles from any non-Forest Service land.

For the record, I'm talking about National Forest land, not O&C or BLM land.
