I'm a male registered nurse with 13 years critical care experience (I'm currently active duty Navy, due to get out in 2 years). When I get out of the service I'm looking to relocate to a quiet, sleepy town and get a job as an RN at a hospital. Astoria sounds great and I'm planning a visit in the fall (I LOVE RAIN AND COOL WEATHER). How are nursing jobs there? I have a lot of experience behind me.

What I'm basically looking for is to buy a home with a little bit of acreage, preferably no neighbors close by, but yet close enough to town to hit up the supermarket or walmart if needed. High-speed internet is a must. Other than that i'm not looking for socialization or yada yada. I'm pretty much a loner and prefer it that way. I do like an occasional beer. How expensive is the real estate up there?

TL;DR: Are there nursing jobs available in Astoria, and how is the real estate?

About all I know about Astoria is that it is rainy and windy and there is one of the best fish and chips restaurants on the coast. Well, Astoria isn't really on the coast, but the restaurant is well known. It is in an old derelict boat.

Real estate can be quite inexpensive but is often a bit run down. Weather is not kind to paint or wood and incomes in the area tend to be low. If you are handy with tools and repairs, Astoria has some really gorgeous old Victorian houses that are often for sale cheap because of the maintenance issue.

I suggest that you contact the local hospital and ask them what the chances are of being hired.

Thanks for the reply sir! I'm not afraid of doing some repairs on a home that fits what I'm looking for in my description. Mainly hoping there's a hospital that is in need of RNs

Most of the hospitals ship out (fly out) their critical patients to Portland. You might do well in the ER.

Thanks for feedback. I can work anywhere in a hospital so doesn't have to be a critical care area. Do you live in Astoria? Are nursing jobs routinely available there? and how many hospitals are in the area?

I am an ICU nurse retired (RN stands for Retired Nurse ) on the southern coast. But most small towns along the coast have sort of little bohunk hospitals that turn on the "bug lights" to land the choppers for evacuation the really sick or injured. It looks to me like there are jobs available in the medical field and very few other kinds of jobs.

Thank you for the helpful advice. In my years of nursing (I was a civilian RN for 8 years prior to joining the military as a nurse) I have never heard of a hospital that wasn't looking for experienced RNs. I know a few years back hospitals had slowed down on hiring new grads but i'm old and salty now haha. I"ll take a look at the area hospitals and see what my options are.

But what does the real estate in this area look like? As I have said in my original post I'd prefer secluded, no neighbors, some acreage (2 acres would be plenty) but close enough to town (~15-30 min drive) to be able to hit up the grocery/department store and still be within range of high speed internet. Any real estate advice? How is the market there? I currently own a property in Raleigh, NC and the housing market is booming. Would have no trouble selling there, are houses selling in Astoria?

I don't know of any forum contributor who lives is Astoria at the moment. Were I you I would contact a Realtor, look at a RE website (I think John L Scott has the best site with graphics). As others have mentioned you need to pay attention to building condition.

My advise is to rent first and explore the area until you find what you are looking for.
