I'm considering taking a position in Coos Bay. My main concern is schools for children. Everything I'm reading online doesn't look good for the schools in the area. I see posts referring to high poverty, high drug use and low funding for schools. Nearby North Bend or Coquille schools have slightly better ratings, but still not great. I'm looking for more firsthand information on what this area is like to live in for a family with school age children. Thank you.

Have you considered the nearby hamlet of Powers?

It looks like the schools are rated in the bottom 15% in Powers. How about Bandon? Those schools rate better.

I personally would not take a job in Coos Bay. It is one of the worse arm pits of a town I have ever seen. Have you considered North Bend? I hear that it is better than Coos Bay. But I don't know, I don't live in a city, (thank goodness).

Default schooling in coos bay?

I just relocated from portland to coos bay and my son just started the public school here and it is not good. I am thinking about home schooling or charter school, but worry about my son not getting any interaction with other children if I do this since he is an only child. I would love any information on any other parents that might get together for play dates? or any info in regards to any other options other than public school in coos bay?
My son is in fourth grade this year and very, very shy. I believe he needs a smaller school, or home school in order to reach his potential.
Please help!
any info is much appreciated!
thanks
lorane

Meth capitol of state.plenty of schools but with the incredible number of folks here who cant read the schools maybe haven't done so well in the past. Probably should teach things like how to cross the street, count change,or personal hygiene.Beautiful area with a lot of nice people, the down side is the good 'ol boy network that controls every thing.Almost no persons of color for the cowardly bullies to target, but not to worry, you will be treated like a second class citizen if you aren't a good "ol boy yourself. lots of drinking and driving here as well as crime God fearing Christions too. (they play God and you better fear them). I lived in Astoria,Or. for several years and with the timber and fishing gone the area 250 miles North of here is very desirable. We came here from Florida 1 3/4 years ago and this area, which is one of the most beatiful in the country, has broken my heart. We will be moving away from here ASAP. Now I understand why so many people we met around Eugene say that they had lived here and couldn't wait to leave. The heyday here way a hundred years ago and with no influx of new people and new ideas this is truly a backwater. A gas shipping port is going to be built here so with the booze, drugs, casinos, and the damage coming to the bay, this is a town that has truly lost its Soul.

OK, take a breath and use paragraph breaks to help your poor readers understand what it is you a trying to say.

I have an interest in the area in that I used to work throughout Oregon and occasionally landed in Coos Bay on the job. Sad to hear that it is going further down hill.

But what is your reference to Astoria about? I can't tell if you are holding it out as a beautiful area or a drug ridden area. Or is it both? And what is the relationship to Coos Bay?

I thought “Meth"ford was the meth capital of Oregon, or at least thats what people who live there tell me. Is there any town in Oregon where the residents don’t think that their town is the only place that has drugs?

I graduated from high school at Marshfield. I moved to Coos Bay from California and was able to graduate a year and half early due to how ahead I was in the school district's system. I was not in any sort of accelerated program, that's just how bad the schools are there.
