It is not a lane designed for 'fast driving'. It is designed for driving the posted speed limit. I don't think a 45 mph traffic zone is designed for 'fast driving' or tailgaiting.

I find it annoying, but am never surprised anymore, when somebody is camped out in the far left lane on I-5 between Portland and Salem going 63 mph. I can't change their behavior, I'm not going to try to get them to learn by flashing my lights or anything, so I just pass them on the right.

We were up there this past fall, and we slowed down quite a bit while driving in Oregon. When in Rome ya know? The only annoying thing we came across was an older couple who refused to go to the right during a passing lane that otherwise had one lane. He stayed right in pace with the cars in the slow lane and when I flashed my brights to remind him to speed up or pull over, I saw him stretch his hand to point at the speed limit sign we happened to pass on the road! lol! Gee thanks hall monitor!

BTW, I'm not really a crazy "California driver", but in Orange County where I live people drive very fast! I never drive in the passing lane unless... I'm passing! I would imagine there might be a self satisfying passive aggressive thing going on with those who drive in the passing lane... especially in Oregon and they notice California plates behind them, lol!
The driver in the left lane was breaking the law by not yielding, the left lane is for passing only in most states. The only problem is that you also broke the law by flashing your lights at him.

I think 80 might be too fast for the combination of triple tractor trailers & 2 travel lanes each way.

Good point. It should be 80 mph / trucks 70 mph in the right lane only.

After spending two weeks in Southern California for a vacation, it was a real adjustment from California driving back to Oregon driving.

Sorry, a lot of Oregonians drive slow af, even in the left lane of the interstates/highways. And this is coming from a "native" Oregonian

Every time I returned to Oregon from Mass., it was glaring how much slower paced traffic is in Ore. It is an adjustment, but one I am always happy to make. Except perhaps when making the drive from Portland down the valley on I-5... I would probably say the same driving out I-84.

They do not seem to have any problem in Idaho with the 80 mph cars 70 mph trucks, and yes trucks can use the right lane to pass
