"Oregonians driving non-commercial vehicles will be allowed to pump their own gas — so long as they're stopped at a service station in a rural area (counties with 40,000 people or fewer) between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m."

Counties with 40,000 or fewer people.

In other words, this does not apply to anyone west of the Cascades.

We did? If so, I apologize for missing that. I just thought that maybe some who are upset about not being able to pump their own gas when going through Oregon would be happy to know that they now have the option of doing so. Although, that's only if they plan their route to drive through the east side of Oregon and between the hours of 6pm and 6am.

OK, now that’s just weird. People can pump their own gas at night, but not in the daytime? So if someone wants full service in those counties, they have to get their gas by 6PM, or they are out of luck?

This is so dumb, that I can’t see it as anything but the first step to eliminating the ban on pumping gas. Next step, expand the program to more counties. Then expand the hours. Next, there won’t be any full-service gas stations in Oregon.

One of the nice things about living in Oregon, is going away.

no it isn't dumb. I explained the reason in the other thread:

The only reason not to have self-service gas pumping is it creates jobs – and I'm for it because it creates those jobs - but only for larger population areas.

The requirement has always been a hardship for the people who live in the very rural areas of Oregon – and much of Oregon, geographically, is very rural.

Many of the gas stations in these rural areas consist of a couple of pumps in front of a general store or the local mechanic's garage. These places are only open for limited hours – there's not that much business. When they are closed, nobody, and that includes tourists, can buy gas. If people could pump their own gas there wouldn't be a problem.

It's an odd law. You can't get gas in rural areas at night because the gas stations are closed? Well, duh... if the station is closed, it is closed and you aren't going to be able to pump your own gas even if it is legal. The pumps are off.

Little bitty stations in very small town rural areas do not have card lock systems and they are not going to install card lock systems just in case some tourist was too dumb to fill up before crossing the desert.

The same for paying for the electricity to run all those big flood lights and the electricity to keep the pumps running, and paying someone to be on call if the card system acts up. It isn't worth the cost for one customer at 2 in the morning who is going to buy 10 gallons of gas.

Gas stations in little rural towns are already open the hours that their local customers need. If they had enormous demand locally for gasoline at midnight, they would be open at midnight already.

Pretty much, you might find a gas station that takes advantage of this here or there in rural Oregon, but it isn't going to be that common or needed.

….........
Many are planning to get card lock systems both for tourists and to serve their local customers better.

What big flood lights???? Big electric expense to keep pumps idling??? Card system acts up???? In the unlikely event it's necessary at all, just charge a couple of cents more per gallon.

They don't think so. Why do you think they fought so hard to get the law changed?? Of course, they're just simple country folk – what do they know?
