I am a nursing student who still has a while to go till I graduate. I visited Orlando in November and loved it there soooo much! I am from Colorado Springs, Colorado so a big city and crime are nothing new to me. I am just curious about the hospitals and the pay for nurses in Orlando. Where should I consider living? It would just be me and my husband with no kids, and i don’t want any so i won’t worry about schools and such. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!! Please and Thanks!!!

Do your research, visiting Orlando and living in Orlando are two very different things.

Seems like you'll do fine as a nurse down here. I hope you are studying to become a RN or greater though because the income gap is significant!!

-A salary range of 38-49K for RN's at Florida Hospital. Florida Hospital Orlando Salaries | Glassdoor.com
-Between $24-$27 per hour for hourly RN at Orlando Regional Medical Center or any of it's Orlando Health locations. Orlando Regional Healthcare Salaries in Orlando | Glassdoor.com

Consider other cities in FLA-like Tampa, Jacksonville, Ft Meyers, Sarasota.

Check out the All Nurses forum on Orlando. From what I hear you have to have two years of experience to get a decent RN job with Florida Hospital or Orlando Regional (the two big hospital systems).

If you are "fresh out of school" you may not be able to find a job in Orlando.

Look into south Florida if Orlando doesn't seem promising for someone just starting out in nursing. I would think they have the oldest population in the state since so many people retire there. If you don't like living in that part of Florida you can make your move once you get more experience. In some ways its the nicest part of Florida and in others it's the least desireable.

The original FL hospitals, in Orlando, are part of the Adventist system (like Penrose St Francis, in the Springs. They have added some into their system (not the 5-6 original), which do not have the same pay scale or benes, as the original FL Hospitals. ORlando Regional Medical Center is good. The closer into the heart of the city, the higher the pay. As far as working conditions go, I've heard Celebration and Southlake (Clermont) are envious places to work. The original FL Hospital (FL South) is "the busiest hospital in the U.S." and I've heard short-staffed...and everything that goes with that problem - unsafe for patients and license. I've heard from many that HCA hospitals are not a good company to work for and have horrific staff ratios. A friend just got a job w Brevard ?? Hospital in cocoa beach- he's excited. There's a FL Hospital (likely not one of the original- check into the insurance first!) in daytona beach, which is right on the water, too!

I moved to Orlando, from CO & would gladly switch places w you!!

Another suggestion: visit Orlando in the summer! The humidity is much different than in November, and quite a jolt, from CO's crisp, dry air!!

This is the problem my wife is facing. She went to school why I got my first year under me, then we moved here and now while she is fully qualified, she can't find a thing because we don't have the networking connections. I strongly suggest getting a couple years under you then coming down!!
