In researching a move to Florida for my family next year , I found that you would have to buy the car six months before the move or have to pay a Florida use tax of 6%.

Very quickly the only link I could find about this is at http://www.flhsmv.gov/dhsmv/newflres.html. The information you need is in the Sales Tax Information for Motor Vehicles box on the right side of the screen.

Not to mention, I believe it's $400 to register an out of state vehicle in FL.

beckycat,

Yep, there is that too.

If I figured correctly it would be $395.40 to register each of our cars (that weigh 2500 - 3499 lbs). A lighter vehicle (up to 2499 lbs.) would be $11 less than that and a heavier one (3500 lbs. or more) would be $13.50 more.

Those fees include the initial registration fee, the metal plate fee, the annual registration and the title transfer.

Add to that the $48 for your driver's license and you are definitely over $400 to be able to drive and register your vehicle in Florida.

But, at least for us, that one time $400-ish and then $60-ish per year is much better than $250-$300+ every year here in California .

Thanx. I kind of knew the licensing was a lot as my sister did it last year when she moved from Colorado to St Aug. My car will be 4mos old but she figured I could wait, there are so many out of state vehicles there and I will be staying with her for at least a month.
