I recently moved to Apopka and am wondering what is the "best" close beach. I used to drive out to Cocoa - but got frustrated when we couldn't find anywhere open for dinner. I'd prefer a town with more "action" once the beach day is over.

I've heard that New Smyrna is a great beach - but a Google Earth search showed off pictures of a very hard-packed sand beach. I like Cocoa's powdery sand.

Can anyone tell me of any other good public beaches? Preferably one with a public shower / changing area in a park.

THANKS!

I really like Ponce Inlet. Its right by the red light house. There is a long jetty there also which is nice to walk out. There is a bathroom, shower and changing area as well, you just have to walk over near the light house.

I also like it because there is always a lifegaurd right there at the jetty, I prefer to be near one when at the beach.

If you like beaches why did you move to Apopka, there is 1800 miles of coastline in Florida and you moved to practically the dead center of the state.

Lots of shark attacks on New Smyrna Beach, wouldn't catch me in the water there any more than I'd swim in Lake Jessup.

From Cocoa Beach drive north four miles on 1A to Port Canaveral and there are several great restaurants right on the water--many have entertainment as well. Perfect way to end you day. Rusty's, Fishlips, Grill's are three to start.

The problem with NSB is all the fishing at the jetty. It's pretty much baiting the sharks closer to shore as they go after the same fish as the anglers. If you stay a good distance from the Jetty and heavy fishing areas you should be good. Of course I make no guarantees, sharks don't read this forum or listen to my advice so swim at your own risk.
