Considering a move to Florida too, so l am doing lots of reading.

Just noticed that 2 people in this thread discouraging you about the 80k income commented in another thread that their kids are in Private schools.

So their estimates could be off since private school is not a standard expense, more like a self-imposed added expense.

Yup. And your 80K will likely go further in Orlando vs many other cities in the country. Also have to consider the lack of an income tax as well

Yes, you are correct.

Like I said, plenty of my friends live off of less than 80k.

I, on the other hand, would find it very difficult considering my current expenses. A lot of them, yes, I can live without, but I wouldn't be providing the same type of lifestyle for my family that I currently do and chose to.

Self-imposed added expenses include private school, sports programs, decent cars, to name a few. They aren't necessary to everyone, and are costly, but have become essentials in our household.

It's not 6 people. "Family of 4" means parents + kids = 4.

$80k can be comfortable if you do it right. Move into a good school district with affordable housing, Altamonte Springs, Casselberry, Lake Mary/West Sanford, Winter Springs all fit the bill. Right than and there you eliminate the need for private school as some these schools are fairly comparable to private schools if your kids are smart enough to get into accelerated programs. Also you can find nice older homes (think 70/80's build) in these areas for under $250 k. Many of these areas also have good community amenities (pools, sports field, sports leagues, children's programs) open to residents for a reasonable rate. Growing up in Altamonte I basically spent my youth in Westmonte Park. For a small fee (less than $100/year) Altamonte Springs residents had access to the park, pool, basketball courts, tennis courts, and community events year round. Also, in these older more established areas you have more options, dining and shopping wise, and prices tend to be cheaper than say around the tourist areas. For instance Dr.Phillips is a great area but you will pay more to shop and dine on Sandlake rd. than you would on 436. So it's definitely doable.

I think it is as long as you budget your money right and how many bills you have.

Whoopsie, my mistake. I misread that as family with 4 kids. If you have debts, it won't get you much that won't result in financial stress. As a couple, if you don't have debts or exorbitant expenses on silly things, $80k is enough to live comfortably in a modest home in a nice area (e.g. a 3-bedroom condo in Lake Nona or Baldwin Park with lots of parks, walking trails, fitness centers, pool, etc.), or a huge home in a poopy area (e.g. a 4-bedroom house with a big yard and a pool in suburbia with annoying neighbors and few amenities). I'm not sure what expenses kids add, since I never had them. If it's significantly more than a 2-adult household, then I'd be way off. Happy hunting!

Based on the username of the OP, if they are moving here from the midatlantic, they will find the public schools here to be abysmal.

Pretty much.

Granted, though, there are LOTS of scholarships available to students for private school. Lots.
