Actually Florida has great Shrimp and Oranges widely available at a decent price. Fresh vegetables are the issue at hand and we get the short straw when it comes to grocery stores and our fake farmers markets. As others have pointed out, produce stands are a good option as well as places like the HomeGrown Coop on Orange Ave near Florida Hospital.

Personally, I prefer PA sweet corn to anything I ever had grown in FL.

But I am sure its an issue of production, distribution and price. It always is.

As for the original question...it's the money.
On what planet does Kansas have the best shrimp?

The issue to me is the sandy soil which is generally lacking in organic nutrients ...

The planet of More-Money-Than-I-Have.

But good point, most of the shrimp eaten now is frozen Walmart shrimp and that's crap compared to fresh. "In the old days" this used to be the case, and the prices were higher the further you got from the source. Now, you can be in Florida and be buying Peruvian Oranges*.

*I guess, I have no data to back this up.

I'm not even on the coast, and I can get fresh shrimp caught in Jax for 6.99 a pound all the time.

We do? I must be missing all this harassment and slavery. It is horrible though... They started me above minimum wage, pay me weekly, and pay me enough to live on. Corporate greed at it's finest. And after a year of service, you wont believe this one... They're going to GIVE me stock in their company. How dare they!

Even in Florida there are seasons so they have to get some things from other places for example.....strawberry season starts in January ends in March for strawberries in the store from Florida. This week the strawberries are from California.

Not all fruits and vegetables are grown here and often the price from up North might be better than selling in state so growers sell to who ever they get the best deal from.
