Happy Friday, kids! Today's Tip is actually several tips on how to care for a freshly-cut Christmas tree and make it stay fresh throughout the holiday season.
Just before you bring your Christmas tree indoors, make a fresh one-inch cut off the end of the trunk. Immediately place the tree into a stand with a basin that holds at least one gallon of water, or one quart of water per every inch of diameter of the trunk. Always keep the bottom several inches of the trunk submerged in water.
Place the tree as far from heater vents as possible.
Commercial mixes, aspirin, sugar and other additives are not necessary. Research has shown that plain water will keep a tree fresh.
To make watering easier, you can set a short length of pvc pipe into the basin. This will allow you to add water without having to crawl under the tree.
Miniature lights produce less heat than larger lights and reduce the drying effect on the tree.
After the holidays, recycle your tree! Many communities will pick up trees and turn them into chips. You can also put the tree in your backyard and place bread and suet among the branches to feed the birds throughout the winter.
Yes, excellent tips. Also if you have a pool and, it's convenient, you can throw your tree into the pool and let it absorb water for several hours right after you make your fresh cut. Drain the excess water off before bringing it into house.
As for adding sugar or 7 Up etal, as some have done in the past, that material speeds up the rotting process of the trunk and can weaken the tree and have it pre-maturely collapse.
