I love to listen to the sounds of our natural world, regardless of the time of day, but there is a special soothing quality to the night sounds.
As a young girl in Michigan, I loved to hear the crickets chirping and the rare hoot of the owls.
In Arizona, in my twenties, it was the howl of the coyotes.
Here, in WA, I rarely am near enough to the natural world to hear anything but passing cars and pedestrians, but during our travels around the country I learned to love the song of the nightingales in the South.
Whatever you are hearing, if it scares you, know that is just your fear. If you live with the natural world on its terms (don't sleep with your food, etc), you won't have anything else to fear -- unless you walk in your sleep. It is movement that attracts predators.
