I never watch Rachel Ray (can't stand her), so wasn't aware she does this. I've been using a bag on the cabinet handle for at least 20 years. Works great for me and doesn't take up counter space as a large bowl would. I don't have much counter space to work with.
.
Her bowls are EXPENSIVE!!! And she has one just for garbage. Even calls it her GB. Well, I call my little bags TB!!! Trash bags
I'll tell my wife Pam, er ah husband that doesn't know how to clean. I wish he would get a job and I'll retire and take care of the house again. It's a disaster in here

Looks like this was a very popular tip girl!!!!
She's got quite a racket going! *haha*
I'll just keep using my free plastic grocery bags.

Where I live we do some pretty serious recycling, so the bowl method wouldn't be practical as I would have to separate the items later. Our refuse goes into one of three wheeled bins, which are color-coded: Green for food scraps, and food-stained paper (anything that has ever been alive can go in the green bin); blue for clean paper, bottles, cans and recyclable plastic and black for everything that will go into the landfill.
We also have a smaller compost bucket with a handle that I keep just outside the kitchen door. When I'm cooking, I put food scraps in a big plastic yogurt container with a lid next to the sink. When the container is full, it gets dumped into the compost bucket, which is taken downstairs once a week or so or when it's full.
Tin cans, glass, milk cartons and most plastic containers get rinsed out and left on the kitchen counter until I have time to take them downstairs to the blue bin. Clean recyclable paper gets flattened out and left on a table in the hall until my next trip downstairs too. Anything that doesn't fall into any of the above categories goes into the trash bin under the sink.
There's so little trash left after separating out the recyclable items that we often don't bother putting our black bin out every week. It's not worth the trouble for the one lonely bag of trash that's in it. Every other week is enough.
It's a habit of mine too! I always have a bag next to me and I cut and throw it in and put the bag in the trash, easy cleaning!
