Great advise PJ, Mine are 120V with battery back-up so I change them once a year. I use the time change to remind me. this information from a battery sight might also help.

Alkaline Batteries vs. Lithium Batteries

POWER: A major advantage of lithium batteries vs. alkaline batteries is that lithium batteries last much longer.
PRICE: Alkaline batteries compared to lithium batteries – alkaline cost substantially less than lithium batteries.
VOLTAGE: If you decide to replace alkaline with lithium, its important to check the replacement has both the appropriate voltage and type/size. Energizer e2 lithium AA batteries produce 1.5 volts, so they can be used to replace any regular alkaline AA units in most cases.
OPERATING TEMPERATURE: Lithium batteries perform even in the most extreme temperatures, making lithium batteries perfect for outdoor devices. Lithium batteries operate in extremely cold climates or extremely hot climates where alkaline batteries cease to function.
WEIGHT: Lithium batteries are much lighter than alkaline batteries. This is a great convenience for portable devices.

I just installed a smoke/carbon monoxide detector for my MIL. Equipped with a lithium battery, it says there is no need to replace battery. Battery outlasts sensors and you replace the detector every 10 yrs.

Thanks for the excellent bonus tips, studedude! That's some good information to have. I printed it out for reference.

We try to also do it with the daylight savings time schedule but often forget. Then it's payback time. The smoke detector usually goes off around 2:00 am!!!

Lithium batteries are probably overkill in smoke detectors which is why i didn't suggest them. Alkalines have been the standard for long shelf life and low drain devices for many years. I do prefer Lithium for my camera as i believe they supply more power when needed. Many new varieties of batteries have hit the market in recent years. It's good to know all the specifics of each type as all are quite expensive.

P.S Rechargeable NIMH batteries may be best for 120 volt with battery back up alarms. If they have recharge capability.
