Toilet seat DOWN, including the lid. And, oddly enough, it's my father who insisted on lids being down. Suppresses olfactory evidence a bit, plus I'm always afraid something's doing to knock over and fall into it. Husband likes to hang his towel over the shower rail and I know that it'll one day fall into the toilet.
When I got married and we had our 3 boys and 1 girl the rule in our house from small on was toilet seat always down and lid closed and the rule of almost 30 years still applies . I even got my in-laws trained
