I found this Tip on the Helpful Hints by Heloise website, and it's something that I've known about and have been doing for years.
When you are packing a cooler or lunch bag, you can keep your food colder for a longer period by doing this. Fill various sizes of plastic water bottles with tap water and keep them in your freezer. When it's time to pack the cooler, use the frozen bottles in place of, or in addition to, ice cubes. They'll stay frozen much longer than ice cubes and will thus keep your food cold for a longer period of time. As an added bonus, when the ice melts in the bottles, you can drink it.

That’s a good tip Pam. However there has been some talk about freezing water in “plastic” bottles and then drinking it. I can’t remember what chemical leaches into the water but I try to avoid doing that. Not all plastics do this if I remember correctly which ones are bad or worse….
Correction: I just found a link that debunks what I’ve heard and been told. never mind……………….
I think this is my favorite tip from all time and my mom did this when we would travel. Was always my favorite when we would go to the lake and out on the jet ski. Always kept a frozen water bottle tucked in my life jacket and always had cold water!! Didn't hurt with the hot flashes either...
Also helps cool the fridge down quicker in the camper. Just place some frozen bottles in along with your other cold stuff.
