A trivial or humorous QOTD struck me as being out of place because today is the 15th anniversary of 9/11 and a difficult day for many Americans. Because the memory of 9/11 looms so large in everyone’s minds, I will make it the theme of…

Today’s Questions:
Where were you and what were you doing when you heard the news of 9/11?

In the kitchen making catsup. I heard my sister's voice on the answering machine saying the US was under attack. Spent the rest of the day glued to the tv until I had to go to work. Kind of numb actually.

Every year on this date, the TV network MSNBC reruns raw news video of 9/11 in real time, just as it happened. Some say recreating that terrible day is “death porn” and a PTSD trigger. MSNBC maintains that they do this to ensure that we “never forget.” What do you think? Would you watch, and why or why not?

No-just doesn't seem right to keep the pain alive.

Has 9/11 had any lasting effect on you, such as fear of flying or tall buildings?

not really

Have you visited the 9/11 memorial at the World Trade Center in New York City? If not, would you visit if you had the chance?
no and no. Probably won't go the the flight 93 site either.

Today’s Questions:
Where were you and what were you doing when you heard the news of 9/11?
- I was working as a contractor for a high profile Federal Government agency. I vividly remember telling my co workers shortly after the second plane hit the Twin Towers what inept leadership we had that we were not allowed to go home when it was obvious we were under attack.

- If the "never forget" quote is true I find that insulting. I no longer watch TV but if I did I would not watch. No sense for me to cloud my mind with any more negativity. I'm trying my best to be more positive and watching that will not help. I watched enough coverage at the time and I assure anyone that I won't forget.

Has 9/11 had any lasting effect on you, such as fear of flying or tall buildings? - Not those or similar examples...

Have you visited the 9/11 memorial at the World Trade Center in New York City? If not, would you visit if you had the chance? - I've been to NYC 3 times and it was never a good experience, especially the last time I was there. I never want to set foot in that city again...

Thanks, Bayarea4.
Happy Sunday to all!
I have a rare Sunday off today and thank goodness the weather is supposed to break from the 100 degree (38 Celsius) heat index we've had the last several days.

Where were you and what were you doing when you heard the news of 9/11? i was at work at the bank - on one of the top floors of a Pittsburgh sky scraper. My sister called me from her office in the financial district of Manhattan; news had just come across their ticker that a plane had struck world trade. What? Why? How? Commercial or private? Either way - that can't be an accident or ATC mistake. ...we got THERE quickly enough - but our brains wouldn't let us make the jump in that sickening if/then statement. We got off the phone but checked in frequently through the morning as she ended up walking home with everyone else lucky enough to be walking home through the dust and debris instead of caught in it. At my work we got the tv on in a conference room right after my first call with my sister. We watched, milled about checking in on loved ones, and soon were released to go directly home.

MSNBC maintains that they do this to ensure that we “never forget.” What do you think? Would you watch, and why or why not?i never have but I'd be interested in watching some - particularly the first couple of hours. Seeing it unfold - the confusion and initial, innocent conjecture (could it be an accident?). - the disbelief and dawning realization of what was happening and, then, of what the implications were. What would it be like to recapture those first impressions - before it was REALLY about individuals and the nation - when it was just you trying to comprehend and react; suspended in and absorbed by this unbelievable chain of events

Has 9/11 had any lasting effect on you, such as fear of flying or tall buildings?i still enjoy flying and love heights and all sorts of tall engineered structures. The lasting effects for me are more personal - friends lost and family directly affected that day - and friends/family lost or affected other ways through serving in OIF & OEF

Have you visited the 9/11 memorial at the World Trade Center in New York City? ive had the opportunity to but haven't thus farIf not, would you visit if you had the chance?maybe eventually. I have visited the memorials at the pentagon and in Pennsylvania.

thank you for this thoughtful/reflective QOTD - enjoy the good stuff everyone

Today’s Questions:
Where were you and what were you doing when you heard the news of 9/11? Home, I was on the phone with the school nurse. Told her to stop talking and hang out and turn on the news. She wanted to keep talking, I told her to stop--turn on the news. My husband works in DC, we had trouble talking with the cell phone service being tied up. He was evacuated from his building with billows of smoke surrounding the city. I hope DC has a better plan in place now rather than shut down all transportation and leave all people stranded.

MSNBC maintains that they do this to ensure that we “never forget.” What do you think? Would you watch, and why or why not? I don't watch it. It was a sad day in history. There are a lot of good things that have happened on September 11 since that year. I feel sorry for people that were born on September 11th. They always have a dark cloud over their day.

Has 9/11 had any lasting effect on you, such as fear of flying or tall buildings? Since that day, every morning when I click on the news I am afraid of what I will read. Afraid of what happened while I was sleeping.

Have you visited the 9/11 memorial at the World Trade Center in New York City? If not, would you visit if you had the chance? Yes, I have. Like EnglishDave, I paid my respects.

― Fred Rogers

^And that is where my mind wants to focus on today.

Today’s Questions:
Where were you and what were you doing when you heard the news of 9/11? At school, going into a meeting. Our meeting wasn't interrupted, so it wasn't until close to 11am before any of us heard all that had happened. Working with young kids, we kept the news to ourselves and continued with our day. I remember as soon as the kids were gone we all gathered & watched the news. I called my daughters, just to hear their voices.

MSNBC maintains that they do this to ensure that we “never forget.” What do you think? Would you watch, and why or why not? I don't watch, no need for visuals to remember.

Has 9/11 had any lasting effect on you, such as fear of flying or tall buildings? Has had a lasting effect, though not fear of flying or tall buildings.
I don't know how it could fail to have a lasting effect on anyone.

Have you visited the 9/11 memorial at the World Trade Center in New York City? If not, would you visit if you had the chance? Haven't, but would go to pay my respects if in the city.

Today’s Questions:
Where were you and what were you doing when you heard the news of 9/11? I was reporting in while awaiting a job assignment at my new military assignment (I was active duty Air Force at the time). I remember watching the video of the first plane hitting and thinking what a terrible accident. When the second plane hit, I knew it wasn't an accident and, that crap was going to hit the fan (and it did).

Yes, I would watch so, I remember what happened and so I don't forget what the score really is out there. Also, I don't want to forget those who died including those who died in that field and likely prevented more deaths when they resisted the terrorists.

Has 9/11 had any lasting effect on you, such as fear of flying or tall buildings? I don't get irked by the security procedures I have to go through though I do find it hard to believe an 83 year old granny is going to a danger. I won't let 9/11 stop me from doing my favorite pastime i.e. traveling and thereby learning more about our awesome world and the people who live in it.

Have you visited the 9/11 memorial at the World Trade Center in New York City? If not, would you visit if you had the chance? Yes, I have. Also, I got to visit the site when it was still filled with wreckage. It was deeply moving. Lastly, I got to visit a 9/11 memorial that a lot of people probably don't know about. It was donated by the Russians and is located at Port Liberty, New Jersey. It's located across the harbor from where the World Trade Center buildings would've been. It's a very nice memorial. I got to see it when I sailed out of Port Liberty on a Maine/Canada cruise.

Today’s Questions:
Where were you and what were you doing when you heard the news of 9/11?

I was living in a rented home in Kissonerga, a "suburb" of Paphos, Cyprus. I was cleaning the living room and went outside to sweep the terrace. An English adult man - with the mental equipment of a small child - who lived with his parents down the street came by. He stopped to say something like, "They're burning New York City....people all dead, etc." and continued down the street muttering about these things. My impulse was to simply dismiss the encounter as it was often impossible to comprehend what he was talking about and where he got is ideas from.

I went inside, and was no more inclined to follow up on it because the TV in the house got only the local Greek language stations, and I understood no Greek. The fellow walked past again on his way home, addressed a few comments at my empty front stairs on the event and went on. I decided, OK I turn on the TV, if there is anything big in NYC it will be on and there are bound to be photos.

When I turned it on, the first tower had already been hit....I could only watch in the cliche phrase, "stunned amazement." I was clueless as I had only the video, no narrative that I could understand....and I just sat and dumbly watched, and then the second tower was hit. I just sat and watched all day, just getting up to go pee....and eventually the station did import some on-the-scene English language commentary.

It's impact was increased because of the JFK assassination. I had been at work when it happened, but we were let go and I was glued to the TV and the reruns. And then I saw Oswald shot to death live as he was being escorted out of jail - which was shocking.

And what I saw on 9/11 brought back that same level of disbelief. And for so much of the day I was as hamstrung to understand what was going on (because of the language barrier) as the man down the street was (because of his disability.) And I was alone, which meant that I had no release for my feelings.

No, I do not think I would. I have become very suspicious of this "never forget" excuse when it is used to repeatedly conjure up recollections of an evil event. I have come to feel that it is manipulating people to maintain a level of fear and anger that for most non-participants is unnatural and unhealthy, and it creates a hot button that can be pushed by unscrupulous people to manipulate large numbers of people for all manner of purposes.

Has 9/11 had any lasting effect on you, such as fear of flying or tall buildings?
Not of this type, no
.

Some of the military events that were promoted subsequent to the 9/11 event have convinced me that one of its main effects was too inspire some deluded people in political power to act on their pre-existing agendas by tapping into 9/11 fears.

Have you visited the 9/11 memorial at the World Trade Center in New York City? If not, would you visit if you had the chance?

No, I have not. I live abroad and my one trip back since the event I skipped NYC metro area, except for an airport.

Would I...........? In large measure this is tied to my view of present-day Manhattan, and the fact that I lived from about age 20 to 60 there. My first 20 years were very rough, and by today's standards so was the city. It was a wondrous experience, and my life changed and the city changed, but I made - forced, perhaps - some continuity out of it. But by the last decade I was one thing and the city quite another, and I left the place with no misgivings. I hear from two friends, and can see and read on the internet of the plastification and touristification of the city. For my head it sounds, reads, and looks unappealing when not repellent. Thus, I have no desire at all to visit the city.

As for the memorial, I would want just a quiet, solitary experience there. But I am led to believe that the place has become a kind of Disneyland of the Dead, people want to "do" the site, it is selfie heaven and thronged with too many yapping people on a holiday doing inappropriate things. I am not, I don't think, a very conventional "believer," but I do feel that there are times and places that you should know to willingly shut your damned mouth for a time and just let the place be. So, I would be disinclined to visit, it sounds as if it is very much of the spirit and style of the new Manhattan.

I think I might be more comfortable visiting the Stoneycreek crash site.

Today in History:

1786 - The Convention of Annapolis opened with the aim of revising the articles of the confederation. A bizarre event in actuality, practically no one attended and it is uncertain if Congress paid any attention to their report after it was sent.

1964 - "Friday Night Fights" is seen on TV for the last time. My father used to watch this, and it automatically pre-empted anything else if he was home when they were on, consequently I went to the movies every Friday night whether I cared about the film or not.

1997 - Scotland votes to create its own Parliament after 290 years of union with England. Historical research shows that a lot of hands were greased to get them to unite their parliament with that of England in 1707.

Quote of the Day:
“You may not be able to change the world, but at least you can embarrass the guilty.” – Jessica Mitford

Mitford was rather naive, or else the guilty have changed since she made her statement.

Had just arrived at the airport and found out no flights were leaving so I had to stay in Hawaii a couple extra days.

It confirmed that no one is safe anywhere, from this type of incident or any other violence.

Today’s Questions:

I was at work when we were told to stop what we were doing and head up to the training room pronto. The tv was on and we watched the tragedy unfold in silence.

Those 2 words might be getting a little old, but they are as true today as the 1st day they were uttered. I will watch because it is part of our history.

Has 9/11 had any lasting effect on you, such as fear of flying or tall buildings?
No and No.

No, but I would if I had the opportunity.

Thanx Bay4.
