Anyone can sue anyone and many do. Whether or not they win in a court of law, is the real question.

Checking back. Thanks much for the advice and well-wishes. What makes it sticky is that this person is a tenant in my SFD rental. He wants to trim the bushes because I don't pay for a gardener. They love the house (lived there since the early 80's and probably consider it their own by now) I wouldn't want to give them any pretext for bringing a lawsuit thinking they could somehow take the house away from me--stupid, I know, but people do stupid things where their housing is concerned.

The thing is a liability plantiff attorney would take this case for free in an effort to reach a settlement while as the defendant I'd have to hire an attorney with a big retainer. That's the option.

I've hit on a solution just reading your good advice, folks. I'll just buy him a gift card to Home Dept for $30 (cost of the damn thing) and let him buy one.

PS if I buy him a gift card with the expressed intention of using it to buy his own clipper and he buys one and cuts his finger off, can he sue me for giving him the gift card?

^^^ Following your logic, one might try.... but that doesn't mean one will succeed...

BTW: they can't take away your house, just because you lend them a faulty trimmer and they get injured.
If you're seriously thinking about such scenarios, you need to get familiar with a bunch of local laws. Otherwise you will lose your mind...

Lots of laws explained here:

BTW: they are living next door for 30+ years, and now you started to get worried about such silly things? Why?
