my husband came across it the other day. It was tiny, about 4-5 inches long, thinner than a pencil...it was black, with a red ring around it's neck like a necklace. Thanks!

If you go to Google, click on images and type in "snakes" you might find it that way.

I found one matching your description called the ringneck snake, it says it is pencil thin black with red ring, totally harmless.
