Stores that offer a great deal on a specific product, good for the week and are out of it on the first day of the sale with no intention of replenishing the stock - but there is a similar product for much more than the advertised price. That used to be called bait and switch.
Yes same here but once it worked out well for me. KitchenAide Mixer on sale at Target for $149.99-got there Sunday, first day of sale, none there. They substituted a $289.99 one for me. Made up for all the other bait and switches.

That's illegal in Massachusetts. Not sure if it's nationwide or not... but it's against the consumer protection law. Do a google search and see Alice... you could report the fraud to your attorney generals office for action.

I believe it's illegal everywhere. It didn't happen to me recently, but has happened in the past. Just something I thought of for today's peeve.
Just as bad as not having the sale item is when you go through the checkout and the prices that come up on the scanner is different then the price on the shelf. Seems I always find a higher price when scanned then the price marked. Most of this happens at Walmart almost all of the time I get several items.

This has even happened at the little grocery store in the next town, and the manager blamed the person that 'plugged' in the new prices. Something about how she must have missed that item. It is frustrating to have to watch every single item ring scanned at all times. That's a lot to remember while you are standing in line. Sometimes miss the old sticker attached methodology.
Bait and switch is illegal everywhere. The stores are required to offer you an equal or better subtitute or rain check.
The only exception is if they state in their ad that it's an "as supply's last" or that it's a "close out" "limited to stock on hand".
If it's a blatant violation, remind them of the law and that you're going to report them to the proper authorities, like the Attorney generals Office and/or the BBB.
