I had to paint in my office today and I was just wondering--do you prefer neutral colors?, do you like something bolder? have you used any of the painting techniques you see on home improvement shows? or do you just wallpaper over everything? What's your preference?
I like to paint in nuetrals. My furniture is in nuetrals to. I have taupes, ivory, and rootbeer colors on my falls and furniture. Then I decorate with colors in my paintings, lamps pillows, etc... This way a I can get a lot of different looks by just replacing a few paintings and curtains. I don't have to totally redecorate the house and I can do it more often if I choose to.
I love bolder colors, my grandmother said, life is best lived in color, so I use that idea all over my house, I did a red venetian plaster all over my bedroom walls, looks amazing.
We are painting. My office is a 2 stage blue, the kitchen is 1 shade deeper than safety orange (small interior room), dining room is a deep gold/tan, the bathroom is a blue/grey. We have yet to pick a color for either bedroom or the living room.
The carpet is a chocolate brown freize, and the ceramic is tan/reddish marle.
In our last house, we tried to go bolder and to our minds it was a failure.
We went with pistachio when it should have been sage.
We have a lot of nice artwork and I think our stuff looks better against a more neutral background. The thing is, we visit other people who have a bolder color on their walls, and we really admire it.
Live and learn. You just have to buy paint carefully--go with the samples and see what you like before committing.

Oh yea, been there!! What I learned is first I take the paint swatch and tape it on the wall for awhile, then i will go a buy a small can of the color and paint a larger area to see if it works, it costs a bit more, but itis worth it tonotmake a mistake. Also dont do dark colors in a small room, look like a dungeon. My favorite color now is a chocolate color(dark) on an accent wall goes with almost everything and adds a puch of color, so if you dont want to do an entire room just do one wall.
I say both neutral colors and bold colors! I love bold colors, but too much can overdo it, and too neutral is too blah. I like to use neutrals for the walls and floor, and bolder colors as accents.
Here is a tip I picked up from an interior decorator:
Select a light, medium and dark color for your palette. It's how you use these colors can affect the overall appearance of your room:
Light is for the background (walls).
Medium- Large furniture and windows. Since the color of these objects will blend with the above lighter selection, the medium furniture will ground the room and give it a foundation.
Darker- Accessories. Since your eye is drawn to a darker more intense color you will be able to arrange you accessories in a manner to guide the eye flowing through your room.
Color!! I hate neutrals. and anything brown. I have a bright kitchen with lime green paint with white trim and with dark charchol countertops, white cabinets, and splashes of red thru out it. and very soft blue in the rest of the house. Color is great if you can handle it and know how to mix it. You dont do a bright blue when you have bright yellow. And for thoses that have wood kitchen cabinets or even other furniture, you have to make sure the paint blends well with it. I know someone that has honey colored wood cabinets and I could only find lavendar that went with them and that is not an apropriate kitchen color. I haven't tried textured paint on the walls yet but I have made clouds in my son's bedroom by using a glaze technique and it turned out great.
