My friend's daughter was vaccinated and still got whooping cough. The pertussis part of DTP vaccine is pretty weak.

Whooping Cough Epidemic Hits California

COMPLETELY agree with you on this - it makes me sick that a disease that should be, and was for a time, eradicated in this country is making a comeback.

And not to be inflammatory, but it's not just the stupid parents who don't immunize that we have to blame - illegal immigration also has a lot to do with it.

Apparently, there are vaccines that may reduce the chances of getting shingles: Shingles: Prevention - MayoClinic.com

Pertussis (whooping cough)........

1960........ 8.23
1970........ 2.08
1980........ 0.76
1990........ 1.84
2000........ 2.88
2005........ 8.72
2006........ 5.27
2007........ 3.49
If the vaccine was so ineffective, the numbers would have stayed the same or risen from the 1950 number.

I'm glad you posted this thread. I had no idea this was happening. I'm going to get the booster at my next doctor's appointment. Thanks!

For what it's worth, I listened to a public radio story about the CA epidemic today; while the issue of legal versus illegal immigrant status never came up, the health experts being interviewed noted that the Hispanic kids in California actually have very high vaccination rates, and also said that Mexico has a better track record of getting children vaccinated than does the United States (and therefore the cultural norm). I realize not every immigrant, legal or otherwise, is coming from Mexico, but that's certainly a big part of the picture in California. That wasn't the point of the overall story, but they did very firmly argue that the fact that in CA so far it's been Hispanic babies who have died has not been due to low or lower vaccination rates within the Hispanic community.

My guess is around 2005 is when mothers decided their kids didn't need immunizations.

Pity that more children will die from whooping cough and the return of other childhood diseases before immunizing becomes standard practice again.

Has something changed? In CA, a child cannot enter kindergarten in a public school without current immunization records being up to date, unless there are religious reasons. All private daycare organizations also require it. Even when our kids started middle school years ago, they were not allowed to register for classes without a record that they'd received one of the (then) newer vaccines. How are non-vaccinated kids slipping through?

I think it's lucky that kids can get these vaccinations as kids now! From what I understand it didn't come out till later and I had it when I was much older and I actually remember it. I would of much rather had it as a baby.

My mom is all for vaccines, including Gardasil which we both got which hurts awful but at least we are better protected.

I just got the shingles vaccine at the local health department (I'm 65)

Believe me, you do NOT want shingles.
