No, actually, if presented properly it needn't kill any entrepreneurial spirit. It's a great way to have the opportunity to learn about business and what it entails. I see lots of opportunity for discussion and learning here.
There are a ton of stories about immigrants who came to New York and began selling sandwiches on the street . . . and later became so successful they opened restaurants. THAT was the American Dream . . . and it has LONG been dead, due to idiotic regulations.
Take your chances people . . .take responsibility . . .if you eat a bad cupcake and croak, oh well . . .
And speaking of charity, just recently I volunteered making sandwiches for the homeless in a church. In the "kitchen" where we were making the sandwiches, there was no running water . . .I wanted to wash my hands and couldn't . . .the bread was put down on counters that were not clean . . .then old, brown lettuce came out, old lunch meat . . .and I was told to slap it all together. I guess it doesn't matter what the homeless eat . . .and this is all "legal."
Feeding the homeless is not a for-profit activity. The cupcakes in question were being sold for profit, at a public park, not private property (like a lemonade stand in one's driveway).

Did you speak up about this? The place where I sometimes volunteer, also run by a church, feeds the homeless every day and they wear gloves and have a spotless kitchen.

Exactly...I got sidetracked with the whole "legality" (not sure why it was in quotes) issue and the previous post. Absolutely, no food for anyone should be prepared in a clean environment with clean hands. Ew,
China and the US have the most food recalls of any countries in the world. Salmonella and Listeria and e-coli are issues. While there are not a lot of deaths from these illnesses, there are some and they can be prevented with proper sanitation and proper cooking in food preparation. One of the consequences of the food borne illnesses has been for schools to disallow all homemade snacks. I don't know that commercial production is necessarily better, but it is inspected.
Where do you think all those food recalls come from? Not from some teenager's kitchen, but from commercial food producers.

Of course. It's like anything. The parents can either present it as a learning opportunity or an examply of how "unfair" life is and commence the blaming and whining.
