Here in Chicago they are in the process of lengthening the school day in some schools to 7.5 hours/day. The idea is that longer days will provide more time for education which will increase the quality of education the kids get. I'm wondering if it's a good idea though. That's a very long day for the younger kids and I wonder if they can take in information at the end of the day after hours and hours of learning. Many Chicago schools also don't have recess and even if they did they have no school yards or playgrounds for the kids.

How long are your children's school day? Do they have recess? What do you think - is a longer school day better?

My kids were in elementary school from 9:00 to 3:40... so 6.67 hours.
That is WITH recess.

How long is your day now? Is 7.5 hours that much longer?

^^ My child elementary child is in school from 8am-3pm, and that is with recess as well, but recess is only about 20 minutes long! So 7 hours in all! But it seems that every month they have at least a day off of school for some kind of in-service day or holiday!!

I think my kids would have gone nuts without some kind of physical outlet during the school day. I don't see a problem with a longer school day, but the kids need to be able to move around and let off some steam.

Our elementary school is 7 hours a day.

The state requirement here is 5 hours. One of my kids is going to be doing online school, and we're going to comply with the 5 hour minimum, or work longer if she needs more time to get that day's lessons done.

For my other child who's still going to the regular school, if they lengthened the school day, I would push for less homework. I don't agree with going to school all day long and then coming home to do a couple hours of homework, then have just enough time for dinner and a bath before bed. We need play time every day, for exercise and to reduce stress.

I'm officially jealous. You didn't have to get them there until 9? Our elementary school starts at 7:40.

No recess in Chicago?

And they expect young kids to sit still and listen?

Never going to happen. That's just nuts.

Yep!
Elementary started at 9
Junior high at 8
Senior high at 7

It has to do with our buses. With the staggered starts, the same drivers did their routes three times.
