I'm starting to wonder about Adams relationship with his mother. Neither had contact with Ryan or the father for over 2yrs.

The Mother in the past had a lot of issues with the Newtown school system an took Adam out of the HS.

The one person that survived that was shot also was a witness the day before wen Adam visited the school.

On many levels it appears the mother was in denial with her sons mental health. And was was influenced by guns and allowed a mentally unstable person go shooting and have access. He is fare from sane. I understand people snap but there is more to this persons emotional profile that has not bee learned yet. \\\ The Forensic MD said he was doing Adams Autopsy Monday ........ one wonders if illegal or Rx drugs played a role.

lastly I appologise if i offended you or anyone else for calling it a mental disorder in my first post.
I believe it has been listed in the DSM 1V and is being taken off in the DSM V...

this article in a good example why i an others can get confused with Aspergers and guns

Mother Nancy Lanza developed gun obsession which she shared with son Adam, who massacred 27 in home and school rampage - NYPOST.com

page 2
Autism expert Nancy Alspaugh-Jackson said violent tendencies toward others are not commonly associated with Asperger’s.
But parents still should not let them use firearms, she said.

Any child with a neurological or psychological disorder should not live in a house with access to guns,” said Alspaugh-Jackson, the executive director of California-based Autism Care and Treatment. “That is, to me, totally irresponsible.”

Newtown school shooter’s mother collected guns, was loath to let people inside home - The Washington Post
First of all, I'll answer your question by saying that it's unfair to put all people with Aspberger's syndrome in the same category, so to forbid them all from having access to firearms is unfair as well.

We need to sit back and wait until the facts come in. Gosh, I posted information about the mother being a teacher at the school....and that it was her 24 yr old son that did the shooting, because I saw it on the news. Turns out, that wasn't the case. The same holds true with a whole lot of "speculation" we're seeing now.

With the "speculative" information available at this time, I'm not convinced that the mother didn't have issues as well. IMHO! You can bet that when it all comes out in the wash, we're also going to hear specialists' diagnoses of something far more sinister than Aspbergers. For cryin' out loud, he doesn't even fit the diagnosis of psychopath...and that's scary!

Regarding the DSM and Aspergers being a 'mental disorder' - the manual is used to diagnose everything from bedwetting to learning disorders (math, reading) to speech disorders....it is a pretty exhaustive list. If, as others on this thread have suggested, we keep guns away from anyone diagnosed using this manual, then kids/adults with dyslexia, math learning disorder and a speech impediment should also not be allowed guns.

Adam probably did have Aspergers if his father has confirmed it, but that is certainly not why he killed 28 people. Obviously there was a whole lot of other stuff going on with this guy.

I think we will soon find out his mother was also a little nutty. There have been reports that she was very controlling, and this morning I read she was involved with some survivalist group that stockpiles food and guns for the end of the world. Come on... people who obsess about the end of the world just aren't right in the head, imo.

I think anyone who feels the need to arm themselves with multiple assault weapons and semi-automatics needs a mental health check.

To answer your original question I don't think ANY child should have access to guns, period!

There are a few disorders that are violent and similar to Autism...like Personalty disorder is one of them and Explosive disorder is another he probably had one of these. Aspergers is unlikely , most of us Aspies couldn't even fathom being violent at least in our Adult years. Younger Aspies between 7-18 can be aggressive when pushed into a corner , or have tantrums or meltdowns but not violent towards others outside the Family.... For him to go in Public be violent towards strangers doesn't make any sense..... I can't find any cases where a officially diagnosed Aspie goes on a rampage in public , not say there aren't murders done by Aspies theres a few....but its rare and often its linked to abuse or bullying and its usually a Family member.

As for your question , no child under 18 should be at a gun range...
As a father of a 21 yr old Aspie son and who is an Aspie himself I pretty much concur with what you say with a couple of caveats. First, No aspie is exactly the same, they're trying to put a round peg in a square hole. Second, most Aspies have other underlying issues that go along with Aspergers. Many are OCD,ADHD etc which play into how they'll act but it isn't the Aspergers alone.
My son loved everyone growing up, probably the sweetest, trusting and kind child you'd want to see until about 5th grade when the bullying started and after several years of it they beat the "trusting and sweetness" right out of him and gave birth to a cynical young man who we're still trying to show life's not all bad to this day.
With that being said, he'd never intentionally hurt someone either with words or physically unless backed into a corner or hurt by them. He's grown up around guns and we've gone shooting quite a bit and I can't imagine that he'd pick up a gun or any other weapon and do something as vile as this incident. I can't imagine a scenario that could happen to him that'd set something like this off and I've seen some things that would've set me off if I was him. If anything I think most aspies would internalize it and do harm to themselves before they'd hurt others.
With that being said, one has to take into account how this kid was trained. Any child can be raised to believe that violence is the only answer and that people are nothing but objects and this is probably doubly so for aspie kids. If his parent(s) whom he trusted completely continually fed him violent ideas and passed their own issues on to him telling this apparently highly intelligent child that logically it was ok to act this way then it makes sense that's just what he did.
