My toddler son sleeps with a bunch of books at night. He likes to set them up and then lean his head on them at night. We try to encourage him to keep them on the bookshelf, but he wants them in bed.

Is there any reason we should stop this? It's not usual to sleep with books at night, but I don't see it as a safety hazard. I'm not wanting to fight with him over books, so I'm not inclined to do anything at the moment.

No biggie.

Be thankful he's staying in bed and sleeping.

I can assure you that in some families it is very usual.

BTW: I know more than one person who has been conked on the head by a falling book during an earthquake. I know of no books-in-the-bed related injuries.

My toddler wants a pile of books in her bed with her. It's weird but hey, whatever floats her boat. Before that she needed all her teddy bears (no other kinds of animals) in her bed by her feet. Kids are weird. It's Awesome.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one to have this issue.

It's not an "issue,", it's a blessing! Your little girl is learning to love books and knows what entertainment can be found within them, so of course she wants to keep them close.

Early exposure to books and being read to are the best way to ensure a child's lifelong love of books and reading. Unless it gets to the point that you can't find the child for the books in the bed, you've got a good thing going.

Plant books in your children's beds for a harvest of book lovers!

My kids always had books in bed after a certain age. They were allowed to stay up an extra half an hour and read in bed. As toddlers, they were allowed to look at books during nap time if they could not sleep.

No big deal.

Does he have a reading or bedside lamp he can work easily? When I was little I'd read in bed when I was supposed to be sleeping. I draped my blanket over my lamp so my parents wouldn't see the light. That's not safe, and my mom flipped when she found out.
