What do others pay for their summer babysitter/nanny? I need to hire someone full time for the summer and I was wondering what was reasonable to pay. One of children does have some special needs but I do not require any cooking and extremely minimal cleaning. The job is basically having fun with my kids.

How many kids, what are their ages? Will the nanny need to drive, own a car? Hours?

Two kids. Elementary aged. Nanny must have a car but I will reimburse for gas when they need driven places. Standard business hours.

You will get a more accurate answer posting a thread in the forum for where you live. This varies from place to place due to cost of living and/or demand for nannies. You can't just assume only a high cost of living area has higher paid nannies. Some low cost of living areas have a shortage of nannies. Some high cost of living areas have an abundance of people willing to be nannies. That's why you should ask local people to get a better idea.

My regional thread is not very helpful at all with these types of questions. I did post in another close by area. I was hoping that by posting here I could get a few responses rather than zero.

Special needs like demands the crust be cut off their sandwich, or legitmate special needs? That will dramatically change your choices and possible pay rate.

Real diagnoses. Mostly a lot of patience is required and the ability to follow a schedule.

In my area, $15-20 an hour for two kids - edging up toward and even over $20 when considering special needs and requiring a car. My boss, for instance, pays over $20 an hour for one child who has special needs and even more if her elementary aged son is also at home.

I'm leaning toward $20 an hour minimum.

My friend's 18 year old daughter earned about $8 an hour ($350 to $400 a week) caring for two upper elementary age children, without any special needs. The daughter had college friends who earned slightly less and friends who earned $10 or $11 an hour. (note: this was a few years ago).

My son currently pays $20 an hour for his nanny to care for one child (and he says that many people pay a lot more than he does for childcare).
OTOH, in the small town where my cousin lives they can pay full time summer babysitters/nannies as little as $5 an hour.

Obviously, it varies a great deal.

Regarding special needs child care. In my area I have heard of parents paying $20 to $30 per hour for a nanny to care for one child with special needs. OTOH, I have heard of parents who found caregivers who accepted $8 an hour (because the caregivers were desperate to earn some money).

I suggest that you ask other parents in your area what they pay. Perhaps you can check on a site such as Care.com.
