The rancor towards people of faith displayed in this thread is appalling. If you want to have your own anti-religious mutual masturbation session, please head for the Atheism forum.

No one was ist telling anyone that they can't believe anything they want.....the moon is made of green cheese if you want to state that....but too much damage and hypocrisy is being done by those that claim to have faith....there is no need to pretend otherwise.

Sure...there are great people that have religion....but these days...it can't be assumed that one is even a nice person just because they claim to be of a relgion.....and they certainly shouldn't get special considerations....and it's not something many parents want for their kids. You need to accept that.

We want our kids to be good , ethical, caring and thinking human beings that contribute to society....how horrible is that?

What's bad is describing it to your kids as people who have fantasies or make stuff up because they're scared. Calling God "sky daddy" or the "invisible dad in the sky" is extremely condescending, and parents shouldn't describe religious people that way. I didn't tell my niece that atheists are crazy people who don't believe in God. I simply told her that some people believe the way we do, some people believe in a different god, some in multiple gods, and some in no god.

sorry, but facts are facts.

what i will try to convey to my children is the importance of looking at the available 'evidence' when faced with decisions; when the 'evidence' for the imaginary friend (talking about the 'imaginary friends' kids have sometimes in their younger years) is ZERO, it should be looked at as such.
You think that it's logical and the reality for there to be no god, but I (and billions of others) think it's logical and the reality that there is a god(s). Not everything has to have tangible evidence, and referring to God as an imaginary friend is really low. You can teach your children to be atheists all you want, but please do so without denigrating others.

I see no evidence that any of the believers who've posted in this thread are damage-doers or hypocrites. Instead, they appear to be thoughtful, caring and intelligent people who are educating their children in their own religious traditions and beliefs while encouraging their children to learn and decide for themselves, minus the obvious judgmentalism which permeates the posts of those who are not believers.

Lumping all faiths and all believers, including cults and cult followers, into one group is more than a little unjust. I see few mainstream believers of any faith behaving as do members of ISIS or the FLDS or other extremist cults, and the vast, vast majority of believers are mainstream, not extremists.

I don't think there's anyone here, believer or not, who does not want their children to be "good, ethical, caring, and thinking human beings that (sic) contribute to society". Implying that refusing religious belief and instruction is the best way to achieve these goals, and that those who follow religious belief and practices are not interested in these outcomes is self-righteous, judgmental and condescending, it seems to me.

As for using terms like "Sky-friends", "incantations", and similar terms, that's just rude, rather childish, and highly self-righteous. Believe what you like, or don't believe anything at all...but demonstrate respect for others who see and understand things differently, especially if you claim that you will encourage your children to decide for themselves when they are mature.

Now that's how you teach tolerance!

Amen to this!

It's funny how much hostile energy is exerted in claiming that people of faith - Christians in particular - are hateful.

This is exactly why we use the word faith when we speak of our belief in God.

"Oh! So many different beliefs, Mom! Which one is right?"

"They're all right, honey, if that's what you believe. There really is no true and false in this world."

YOU'RE A UNITARIAN!!

But really, how can they all be true when they contradict each other? *sigh*
