Hi guys,

We're a team of developers and we have this idea of an app and would really appreciate if you guys could gives us some feedback on it. Working at this after work hours is hard enough; it's really important to us that the whole premise isn't flawed. We really hope this doesn't go against the rules of this forum.

Basically, we'd like to create a fun environment for children to work towards achieving goals, and for parents to manage these goals and reward them for completing them.

The whole thing would be flavoured as an RPG, with kids completing quests such as "Get three A-s in a row", "Read Moby Dick", or "Collect 5 of each coins in circulation". The parents would post these quests, along with maintaining a list of redeemable rewards. Children can acquire points from quests and choose rewards such as "Ice cream!", "+1h later bedtime", or "<app from the App Store>".

To make it easier for the parents, it could be that some quests might be repeatable (e.g., "Take out the trash" or "Eat an apple daily"); also, the most successful quests/rewards could be suggested to other parents lacking ideas.

To make it even more enticing for children to participate, we're also thinking about adding an in-app game in which the player benefits from completing real-life tasks. Something like Pokemon, and your companion gets stronger as you get quest points.

Once again, this really helps us in deciding whether it's worth pursuing or not, so thanks a lot for your comments!

Maybe. It sounds like it could replace the "chore chart" on the fridge. The thing that's good about the old fashioned way is the visual reminder. If I had the app on my own phone, I'd have to be showing it to them all the time. It isn't a bad idea, though.

How would it be different from Chore Monster which is already available as a free app? You can put these same quests in there and assign point values for prizes.

It's a neat idea, but I think you need a good storyline to go with your character. Probably many storylines and whole libraries of appropriate upgrades, ie. Stuff like; dinosaur world, wild west world, spaceman spiff world, princess world, ye olden time knight world, etc.

Sounds like a good idea, but I think you'll have a hard time generating enough content to draw kids in and make them want to take out the trash to get their knight a new sword or what have you. Otherwise, its just like choremonster.

But, yes, I would love to reward my kids with no cost electrons for real world chores--just like the geniuses who started farmville, etc. Etc.

Personally I would never use anything like any of the above mentioned items.
Our children were given chores to do and they did them without rewards, being paid, given gifts or an allowance.
When we were children we did the same thing because we were taught to do these things and were expected to do them without question.

Too bad you didn't make a Holier Than Thou Parenting app. You'd make at least a buck from posters in this thread.

This the route we are going. My husband was given assigned chores and earned money for completing them, but I wasn't. We cleaned house as a family on the weekends and were told to do things as we went and we just did them. Our rooms were our business to keep clean or not. My room was always clean, my sister's, a nightmare.

We are having decent success with this method so far (my kids are little, so they get some slack). Basically I ask them to do a chore, if they refuse they have to sit on their bed quietly until I finish doing it. They almost never pick to sit on their beds. When they complete it, I reward them verbally by telling them they worked and I'm proud of them and appreciate their help. It works out most of the time.

Anyway.... I know a lot of people who do the chore chart thing and have success. The only problem I see with it in app form is, as someone mentioned, the kids can't see it like they can a chart of the fridge, which wouldn't be as motivating. Out of sight, out of mind.

Thank you guys for all the responses!

I actually didn't know about Chore Monster, and as it seems it has pretty much all the features I described; but that's exactly why I came here, so I can find out about this kind of stuff .

Cheers!
