I'd love to hear what strategies people use to make sure they don't lose their kids - like at the mall, or other open spaces. I've heard some people literally keep their kid on a leash (like the one that you tie to their waist) but I couldn't bear to do that to either of my children. Any other things you've tried, or are you generally of the belief that you'll find your kids even if you lose sight of them momentarily?
I can't reconcile being fearful of losing my kid (enough to start a thread about it) but being unwilling to use a "leash." They are attached to backpacks, by the way, and can be quite handy in crowded places like airports.
I used a "leash" on my daughter when she was a toddler because she was constantly running off. It was like a little harness that went over her shoulders and around her chest, with a strap attached to the back. She's not scarred for life....and we never lost her in the mall nor over a cliff while hiking.

It's just something about the sight of a rope attaching a human and another that reminds me of walking a dog. Rationally, might make sense, but subconsciously I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it.
We taught our children to stay with us and attach themselves to one of our belt loops or pockets so we could always feel them with us or they were in strollers.
If it were really busy, we kids often grabbed the shirt of whichever family member was in front of us. We also always had a designated meetup spot that we either knew where it was (when at a familiar place such as Knott's or Disneyland) or was easy to see from anywhere at the venue (when at a non-familiar location).

Wow this is a no-brainer but I can't believe I hadn't tried this before.
