Christmas is coming up fast and my children are starting to write up their Christmas lists. We usually buy them one "WOW" gift and then a few small one's. All from Santa of course. I'm wondering how much do spend on your kids for Christmas? How much per child and do you try to keep it fair if you have more than one?
Does it matter? Parents shouldn't spend more than they can comfortably afford, so to throw out dollar amounts is not only meaningless, but guaranteed to cause ill feelings. Spend what YOU want, and don't worry about the rest of us.
For the record, we've stopped celebrating Christmas. Our kids are grown, and we've decided to travel (with them) instead. We won't even put up a tree this year. I couldn't be happier.
I spend more then I should, less then what makes me go broke.
I am torn a bit this year. My kids have all the toys they could ever want...I think I might get them a couple toys and then other stuff to round it out. They are tweens now so I think I can come up with some ideas that arrant just legos and littlest pet shops.
I won't spend a lot. My older child has too much stuff - far too much. A lot of the clutter is things like McDonald's happy meal toys, stuff other people gave her, stuffed toys won in arcades at the fair, etc. I had to throw a lot of it out, donate or recycle bin. I am just going to buy a few small things this year and that's it. When I was a kid, we didn't get "wow" gifts. We got a few little things and a stocking with candy and fruit. I have to admit, there is also some disappointment about the kinds of stuff my daughter is interested in. She doesn't read books, she only wants to play video games. She's never liked dolls, the few she had, she destroyed, also destroyed her doll house. She has actually destroyed many of her toys and things. Some of this probably due to her having ADHD.
I'm pretty sure that there have been previous threads on this topic. I recall that parents listed every figure from $25 per child, to $100 per child, to $250 per child and a few people said figures like $1,000 or $2,000 (or even more) per child.
I know several families who go with the three gift method (like the gifts from the three wise men to baby Jesus). It could be "Something to wear, something to read, & something for play".
BTW, at our house, Santa usually only gave one medium or large, or maybe two small presents. Mom & Dad gave the rest of the gifts. IMHO, it makes it easier to transition when the kids are too old for Santa.
My son (9) only asked for one gift every year a pitcher plants a few years back, a big moving box full of packing nuts a year after that last Christmas it was brownies cookies from vat19. This year he might want a terrarium. So, to answer your question it should not be more than $50
It using depends on how much money I have available that year but usually around $500 each for my wife and son.this year it will be more like $700I for my son to get what he asked for.
We could afford to spend a lot, but we don't, because we want our kids not to expect everything in the world, and we don't think they need 8,000 toys. We'll spend about $150 each. They are young, so we may spend more when they get bigger. Like most kids, no matter what we buy, they don't play with it much, and end up playing with sticks in the yard.
My kids are grown, but it was more about giving them the same number of gifts to open, than it was spending the same amount. The budget fluctuated over the years.
They would get one big gift they wanted and about 3 lesser ones. I must admit that even my husband never "gets" that I would like him to get me a few things to open, instead of just one expensive thing. Oh well.
