a cousin invited me to her first-born kid's first birthday party. obviously it's most practical to ask them what they would like for gifts, but i'm curious what moms and dads here would prefer for their one-year old son's birthday gift. i would like to give something practical (for the parents to use with the kid) or educational for the kid. nothing crazy expensive either as i just booked a $2000 trip to see my parents in december for their golden anniversary. i'm broke

For his 1st birthday, I gave my nephew a little "tent" that's designed to function as a ball pit, and about 200 "crush-proof" plastic balls. HUGE hit!

Favorite books in my house are The Pout Pout Fish, The Little Blue Truck, Little Quack, If You Give A Mouse A Cookie. Board books are great as they withstand rough toddler hands.

I would get the child an item that would boost vocabulary.

We bought our own child, and gifted to many, a package of plastic toy food and household items (veggies pots and pans), or simple common animals figures. or Big Picture books of machinery/truck/transportation, etc. these gifts work for both boys and girls, and will bring on the baby talking. Big posters of words and alphabets are great too, setting up learning early.

A good Mother Goose book, or an illustrated anthology of traditional nursery stories ("Goldilocks and the Three Bears", "The Three Little Pigs", etc.) - these have stood the test of time. CDs of traditional nursery songs - "London Bridge", "The Farmer in the Dell" "Humpty Dumpty", and so on.

Most Mother Goose rhymes have associated melodies and some are singing games (the two suggestions above are singing games, though they can stand alone (deliberate pun) as well. They should be sung rather than recited, though. Familiarity with Mother Goose helps build vocabulary, sense of suspense and drama, awareness of rhythm and rhyme, and humor. Many nursery rhymes are also very practical - "One, Two, Buckle My Shoe" works to expedite dressing a squirmy toddler, even if it's Velcro My Shoe more often these days.

For other good book suggestions, consult your local children's public librarian. He or she will have lots of booklists and other suggestions. There are also online booklists, but talking with a pro in person can't be beat.

I also agree with books (Any by Laura Numeroff) or clothes that are for the next season in a size bigger! Go to your local Target or Walmart and spend $10. They will be happy for any gift I'm sure!
