I think the majority of parents look for a balance between all aspects (inside/outside, screen time/free time, supervision/free-range). Not all agree on the "right way" and situations widely vary, but I think almost all are doing their best.

Most kids like to play outside if they have someone to play with. A lot really don't enjoy it if there isn't anyone to play with.

Ive never seen a kid who was like "woohoo I am going to play outside and there is no one else out there to play with" (not that some wont play alone outside, but it isn't all that fun)

I have neighbors who have young kids who are actually outside on the trampoline or on the swing set but they are inside the fenced yard and there is a big dog that looks like he would rip someone a new one if they messed with his kids LOL I kid you not .

Nope. No hypocrisy when there are plenty of hobbies and tasks that can be done in the home. Geesh I do not recall my grandkids rushing to video games or electronics. We do music practice, crafts, repair bikes,color,bake...A multitude of interactive tasks. So no,being inside and safe can have its learning and bonding moments. Ohh and indoor tents are a hoot! We bake cookies, hide in a tent with a flashlight and the silly stories...Even with their stuffed animals. Using ones imagination can be done indoors too

I don't know any parents like that. None. Most kids here are outside every day and hang out with friends often.

Who are these people forbidding their kids to go outside?

If you live in a neighborhood or town where it is dangerous for your kids to be outside, then if it was me I would move to where it was safe for them to be outside.

In our town, you see kids playing outside all over town.

Aren't there other "inside" options besides screen time? Back in the old days your "screen" might have been a book - some parents were concerned about that, too.

So it's all about balance - some (limited) time online/tv, some time reading, some time inside playing nonelectronic games/hobbies/with friends, and some time outside playing by self or with friends.
