Unfortunately I have heard a lot about this type of behavior. Some middle school kids were recently suspended and rumor has it (it was at a different school than my kids attended but the same district so rumors abounded - not sure how much was true but something to think about anyway)they were also at risk of being charged with distribution of child pornography since the girl in question was 14 (had sent a picture to her bf who passed it on to a few friends who passed it on etc). I would be extremely wary.
Remind your daughter that once she sends a picture to someone, that person can do whatever they want with it meaning they could send it to ANYONE, post it on the internet, etc.
Yes, I've heard about it. The first story in the link above happened close by us. I told my daughter about it. Her cellphone can't take pics or receive them and I'm GLAD! It is scary what these kids THINK is okay nowadays and that they believe this behavior is "safe". I don't get it. About the only reason I even let my daughter have a myspace is so that I can keep track of what kind of kids she is friends with as it shows me if their parents are ACTUALLY monitoring what their kids do online and the kind of pics they take w/ the phones and such. I've made very sure my daughter KNOWS that ANYTHING be it words OR pics posted online or taken via a cellphone CAN come back to bite you on the behind and risk getting into some colleges.
as well as getting jobs after college....My dd is very aware employers are starting to check out applicants' Facebook pages. Problem is - doesn't even have to be yours. You could be at a party someone takes your picture doing something dumb, puts it on their Facebook page or cell phone and puts it out there for the world. Scary times...glad that stuff wasn't around when I was young and dumb!
I have heard about it also and have really talked to my sons and THEIR friends. Just so you know, its not just the boys pressuring for them. The girls are pressuring for them too and SENDING them when NOT asked or putting them on myspace. I think that they all think the other gender will "like"/lust them more. You stay one step ahead of your kids so much now!
Oh I know it's not just the boys pressuring the girls - I think the girls are often the instigators. Boys assist by playing along and passing the pictures - which is horrible also. What a &%$#ing mess. These kids have no idea...

EVEN WORSE! I heard over the weekend of a 6th grader getting KICKED OUT OF SCHOOL because she was making FAKE myspaces up of people. Nothing stops someone from doing this either. She was making up fake myspace pages of people she did not like and putting pics of them on there that she had gotten or taken herself and then posting bad things about them. The mom telling me about this (that also happens to be a lawyer) said there was nothing that could be done about that. BUT, what they got her on was she took a public pic of a group from the school (think boy scouts, girl scouts, etc kind of clubs) and made a myspace page FOR THEM and posted a pic of some of their activities that the public was invited to so that it looked "legit" SOMEWHAT. Then she asked people to make RUDE and CRUDE comments about them. She had PURPOSELY taken pics of things that could be taken WAY OUT OF CONTEXT and exploited those. That is how they got her kicked out of the school.
Another thing that happened in a suburb by us was a group of kids did not like a certain teacher at their high school. So they took some of the pics they had of this teacher and made a FAKE myspace page for this teacher w/ all kinds of rude comments that the teacher was SUPPOSEDLY making. They got into big troulbe for it.
Yet, what gets me with ALL OF THIS is WHERE THE HECK ARE THE PARENTS WHEN THEIR KIDS ARE ON THE COMPUTER?!?!?!?!?! It is BLATANT that there are PLENTY of parents out there that do NOT monitor what their kids are doing w/ their cellphones or on a computer. Like I said, one reason why I do let my dd have a myspace............ so I can monitor what these "friends" are doing and it lets me know right away IF the parents ARE being parents are not.
Here's the excuses I have heard over the years by "parents" who are just too lazy to do their job:
My child is just so smart that he/she is not challenged appropriately at school so he/she is just finding an outlet for their intelligence (love this cause it's a double whammy - you and your poor dumb kid would just not understand. What smart kids can't be well behaved?)
Kids will be kids....it's just what they do nowadays. These will be the same parents who serve alcohol at their teens parties and say they'd rather have them be supervised..
I can't control everything they do....
But it's haaaard (imagine whiney voice). Um, yes but it's called parenting.
That said, some kids will find a way despite your monitoring - especially as they get older and smarter. They will have access to computers at friends houses and the library...not a lot you can do about what you don't know.
But if you have raised them with a standard and they know that, it does help. It won't guarantee they won't make bad choices - they will, but you hope that their upbringing will shine through eventually.
